Kim Dong-ri’s novel “Hwangtogi” employs spatial narratives to symbolically depict oppression, conflict, and tragedy within the historical context of Japanese colonial rule. This study analyzes the impact of ‘Hwangtogol’ a paternal space, and ‘Annaetbeol’, a maternal space, on the desires, oppression, freedom, and tragic fate of its characters. Hwangtogol represents a symbolic space dominated by paternal law and social norms, suppressing characters through taboos and control. Conversely, Annaetbeol serves as a maternal space where desires and freedom are partially liberated; however, such liberation is incomplete, ultimately leading to tragic outcomes for the characters. These contrasting spaces interact to deepen the conflicts and oppression faced by the characters, forming a multilayered narrative that aligns with the historical realities of Japanese colonialism. This study reveals that space functions as more than a narrative background, acting as a literary device that connects textual narratives with historical contexts. It further provides new insights into Kim Dong-ri’s literary works and Japanese colonial literature.

김동리의 소설 황토기 는 공간을 중심으로 한 서사 전개를 통해 일제 강점기라는 역사적 배경 속 억압과 갈등, 비극을 상징적으로 드러낸다. 본 연구는 황토기 에서 부성적 공간인 ‘황톳골’과 모성적 공간인 ‘안냇 벌’이 인물의 욕망과 억압, 자유와 비극적 운명에 미치는 영향을 분석한 다. 황톳골은 아버지의 법과 사회 규율이 지배하는 상징적 공간으로, 금 기와 통제를 통해 인물의 행동과 심리를 억압한다. 반면, 안냇벌은 욕망 과 자유가 부분적으로 해방되는 모성적 공간으로 작용하나, 그 해방은 불완전하며 인물의 비극적 결말로 이어진다. 두 공간은 대립적이면서도 상호 보완적인 관계를 형성하며, 인물 간의 갈등과 억압을 심화시킨다. 이러한 공간적 구조는 일제강점기라는 역사적 맥락과 맞물려, 억압적 현 실의 다층적 의미를 형성한다. 본 연구는 공간이 단순한 배경 요소를 넘 어 텍스트의 서사와 시대적 맥락을 연결하는 문학적 도구임을 규명하며, 김동리 문학과 일제강점기 문학의 새로운 해석 가능성을 제시한다.
