This study examines the sublime in the poetic world of Kim Hyunseung. His poetry reflects a metaphysical investigation of human relationships with the self, nature, and the divine, elevating these explorations to the realm of the sublime. The study focuses on two main aspects of Kim’s poetry. First, the pursuit of the sublime through solitude is analyzed through works such as “Prayer of Autumn,” “Tears,” and “Sorrow.” These poems depict solitude not as mere isolation but as a transformative process of self-reflection and the discovery of ultimate values. Second, the poetic mission and ascetic devotion are explored through poems like “The Spring,” “The Platanus,” and “Tomorrow.” These works highlight Kim’s integration of life and poetry, showcasing his commitment to transcendental values by symbolically merging human existence with the natural world. Kim’s poetry transcends its Christian foundation, addressing universal themes of humanity and the fundamental challenges of life. It sublimates pain and sorrow into a sublime vision, revealing a profound will to discover transcendental values even amidst solitude. This study illuminates the essence of the sublime and its poetic embodiment in Kim Hyun-seung’s works, reevaluating his significance within the landscape of modern Korean poetry.

본 연구는 김현승 시 세계에 나타난 숭고의 의미를 고찰한다. 그의 시는 신앙, 고독, 슬픔, 그리고 자연과 사물의 상징을 통해 인간과 세계, 신과의 관계를 형이상학적으로 조명하며, 이를 숭고라는 초월적 경지로 승화시키고 있다. 본 연구에서는 김현승의 시 세계를 크게 두 가지로 나 누어 살펴보았다. 첫째, 고독을 통한 숭고의 지향에서는 가을의 기도 , 눈물 , 슬픔 등의 시를 중심으로 인간 내면의 정화와 초월적 가치에 대한 탐구를 분석하였다. 이들 작품에서 고독은 단순한 고립의 감정을 넘어 자기 성찰과 궁극적 가치를 발견하는 과정으로 나타난다. 둘째, 소 명의식과 인고의 시학에서는 샘물 , 플라타너스 , 내일 등의 시를 통해 시인이 삶과 시 쓰기를 통해 실천한 숭고한 자세를 조명하였다. 이 과정에서 자연과 사물이 인간의 내면과 결합하며 초월적 가치를 형상화 하는 김현승 시의 독창성이 드러난다. 김현승의 시 세계는 단순히 기독교 적 신앙에 국한되지 않고, 보편적 인간성과 삶의 본질적 과제를 탐구하 며, 이를 통해 현대시에서 독보적인 위치를 차지한다. 그의 시는 슬픔과 고통을 숭고로 승화시키며, 고독 속에서도 초월적 가치를 발견하려는 의 지를 보여준다. 본 연구는 김현승의 시를 통해 숭고의 본질과 시적 구현 방식을 탐구하며, 이를 통해 그의 작품이 한국 현대시사에서 가지는 의의 를 재조명하고자 한다.
