In this paper, we examine the artistic aspects of Korean identity that emerge at the intersection of the history of the Korean diaspora in Central Asia. To this end, we address several topics to trace the cultural typicality of the Korean diaspora. First, we explore the cultural significance of migration and the cultural response of the Korean people in the history of Korean migration. In the trajectory of their forced migration from the Korean Peninsula to Central Asia by Stalin’s regime in 1937, and after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the ‘Koryo’ people belong neither to their country of residence nor their homeland, but instead have acquired a differentiated identity within the boundaries and distances between these places. Second, focusing on public exhibition events at the National Museum of Art and the Biennale, we examine the patterns of the Korean diaspora. Exhibitions such as ≪The 2002 Gwangju Biennale, There≫, ≪The Korean Diaspora Artists, in Asia≫ (National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, 2007), and ≪Korean Diaspora, Beyond the Diaspora≫ (Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, 2018) successfully thematized the changes in identity and cultural responses of Koreans and ‘Koryoin (Koryo people)’ from a contemporary art perspective. Third, we analyze the dynamics of these identity changes through the works of individual ‘Koryoin’ artists. First-generation ‘Koryoin’ artists Byun Wol-ryong, Shin Soon-nam, and Ahn Il reveal the collective, spatial, cultural, and linguistic experiences of the Korean people. In addition, the next generation of artists responds to global changes, showcasing various aspects of identity. Finally, we examine the identity of contemporary ‘Koryoin’ artists as expressions of ‘choices’ and ‘hybrids’ through the case of Roman Zhakarov, a young Koryo artist who has been actively engaged in recent years.

연구자는 본고에서 중앙아시아 한인 디아스포라 역사와 그 역사와의 교차점에 서 드러나는 고려인 정체성의 예술적 양상들을 살펴보고자 했다. 이를 위해 연구 자는 한인 디아스포라의 문화적 전형성을 추적하기 위해 다음과 같은 몇 개의 주 제를 다루었다. 첫째, 한인이주의 역사 속에서 이주의 문화적 의미와 고려인의 문 화적 대응을 검토했다. 한반도에서 극동 연해주를 거쳐 1937년 스탈린 정권에 의 한 중앙아시아로의 강제이주, 그리고 1991년 소련연방 해체 이후 연해주 귀환의 궤적에서 ‘고려인’은 거주국과 모국 어디에도 속하지 않으며, 오히려 그 경계와 거 리 속에서 차별적인 정체성을 획득해 왔다. 둘째, 국공립미술관과 비엔날레를 중 심으로 한 공공전시이벤트를 중심으로 한인-고려인 디아스포라의 표현 양상을 살펴본다. 2000년을 전후로 본격화된 2002 광주비엔날레 ≪저기, 이산의 땅≫, ≪아리랑꽃씨≫(국립현대미술관, 2007), ≪코리안디아스포라, 이산을 넘어≫ (2018) 등은 한인-고려인의 차별적 정체성 변화와 문화적 대응을 동시대 미술의 지평에서 주제화하는 데 성공했다. 셋째, 그러한 정체성 변화의 역동적 양상을 개 별 고려인 예술가의 작업을 통해 검토했다. 1세대 고려인 작가 변월룡, 신순남, 안 일 등은 고려인의 집단적 경험, 장소적 경험, 문화·언어적 경험을 드러낸다. 아 울러 후속 세대 예술가들은 세계의 변화에 대응하며 다양한 정체성의 양상을 보여 준다. 넷째, 최근 활발한 활동을 보여주고 있는 젊은 고려인 예술가 로만 자카로프 (Roman Zhakarov)의 사례를 통해 선택과 혼종으로서의 동시대 고려인 예술가 의 정체성 양상을 검토해 보고자 한다.
