This study examines how ecological consciousness is represented in Choi Sung-kak’s novella Yaksa Buddha Does Not Come. The narrative portrays the severe impact of water pollution, as characters endure physical and mental ailments, illustrating the existential threat posed by ecological crises to human survival. This study argues that the author employs rhetorical strategies to address these crises, analyzing them from two perspectives. First, the concept of “wounded bodyscape,” an extension of Ajumeze’s “land-/ bodyscape,” is used to explore the characters’ suffering within the multilayered entanglement of water, humans, and toxic substances. This analysis reveals the separation and conflict between humans and nature while also examining the role of pain in healing and mending these conflicts. Second, it investigates how the image of Yaksa Buddha functions within the narrative. Although Yaksa Buddha traditionally symbolizes healing and recovery, in the novella, the figure remains hidden behind the closed doors of Yaksa Hall. This absence of immediate salvation provides a narrative gap, encouraging readers to reinterpret and imagine the figure of Yaksa Buddha. In conclusion, this study reveals how the author connects human and environmental suffering, constructing an ethical narrative that seeks the possibility of ecological community restoration.
