This study deeply explored how Chinese Graduate Students (CGSs) experience the academic growth through studying in South Korea by using the Photovoice Method. To achieve this goal, five CGSs were selected as participants who are currently enrolled in the graduate projects. The participants were asked to provide authentic and abundant visual data through three rounds of photography. Following this, the researchers conducted individual interviews with the participants and engaged in several in-depth conversations concerning their experiences of academic growth through studying in South Korea. The collected photos, interview transcripts, and observational data were systematically analyzed based on the thematic analysis method. Therefore, the following four key findings were identified, namely: the meaning of academic growth experiences is discovered to be: ‘the establishment of life direction through clear motivations for study abroad,’ ‘the demonstration of research capabilities within the academic framework of graduate school,’ ‘the conscious maintenance of a balance between daily life and research activities during the study abroad experience,’ and ‘the building of a support system through international student networks beyond the nationality boundaries.’ Finally, the study proposed suggestions to support a healthier and more sustainable academic growth for CGSs during their stay in South Korea.

이 연구에서는 중국인 대학원생들이 한국 유학을 통해 어떻게 학문적 성장을 경험하는지 포토보이스 기법을 적용해서 심도 있게 탐구하였다. 연구 수행을 위해서는 대학 원에 재학 중인 중국인 대학원생 5명의 연구참여자를 선정했고, 이들에게 총 3회의 사 진 촬영을 요구하여 진실하고 풍부한 시각적 자료를 확보하였다. 이후 연구자와 연구 참여자는 촬영한 사진을 토대로 개별 면담을 했으며, 이들이 한국 유학을 통해 학문적 성장한 경험에 관해 함께 수차례 진지하게 대화하였다. 수집한 사진, 녹취록과 관찰 자 료는 주제 분석법에 따라 체계적으로 분석하였다. 그에 따라 다음의 네 가지 핵심적인 발견점을 확인했다. 즉, 연구참여자들의 학문적 성장 경험의 의미는 ‘뚜렷한 유학 동기 로 수립해 가는 인생 방향성’, ‘대학원이라는 학문 울타리 아래 펼치는 연구 역량’, ‘유학 생활 속에서 스스로 만들어가는 일상과 연구의 균형’, ‘국적 뛰어넘는 유학생 네트워크 로 갖추는 지지체계’로 밝혀졌다. 마지막으로, 한국 유학 중인 중국인 대학원생들이 더 욱 건강하고 지속 가능한 학문적 성장을 이룰 수 있도록 지원할 방안을 제시하였다.
