The purpose of this paper is to analyze the way Disney imagines China and depicts it in narrative through the live-action version of Mulan. The live-action version of Mulanis based on the animated musical Mulan, but attempted a completely different interpretation from the original. One of them is to highlight the Silk Road instead of the Great Wall of China, which serves as a mechanism to project America’s perception of the Middle East, and depicting Northern Wei Dynasty as if it were the Tang Dynasty was used as a device to recall memories of the empire from China’s glorious past. The live-action version of Mulan attempted to maintain Disney’s tone of political correctness, but still led the narrative in black and white logic and revealed prejudice against nomadic peoples. In addition, the concept of qi(氣), the meaning of the phoenix(鳳凰), and the virtues of loyalty(忠) and filial piety(孝) were interpreted to suit Disney’s preferences. The live-action version of Mulan can be said to be a work that showed its limitations despite putting a lot of effort into it. However, it is worth paying attention to because it reveals the China imagined by Disney, China’s desires as interpreted by Disney, and Western prejudice against East Asia.

본고의 목적은 실사판 <뮬란>을 통해 디즈니가 중국을 상상하고 이를 서사로 그려내는 방식을 분석하는 데 있다. 실사판 <뮬란>은 애니 <뮬란>에 토대를 둔 작품이지만, 원작과는 전혀 다른 해석을 시도하였다. 그중 하나는 만리장성 대신 실크로드를 부각한 것인데, 이는 중동에 대한 미국의 인식을 투영하는 기제로 작용한다. 또 북위(北魏)를 마치 당(唐)나라처럼 묘사한 것은 과거 중국의 영화로웠던 시절, 제국에 대한 기억을 소환해내는 장치로 활용되었다. 실사판 <뮬란>은 정치적 올바름이라는 디즈니의 기조를 지키고자 하면서도 여전히 흑백논리로 서사를 이끌어갔고, 유목민족에 대한 편견을 드러내었다. 기(氣)의 개념, 봉황의 의미, 충과 효의 미덕 등에 대해서는 디즈니의 기호에 맞게 해석하였는데, 실사판 <뮬란>은 많은 공을 들였음에도 한계를 보인 작품이라 할 수 있다. 하지만 디즈니가 상상하는 중국, 그들이 읽어낸 중국의 욕망, 동아시아에 대한 서구의 편견 등을 그대로 드러내고 있기에 주목할 가치가 있다
