The aim of this paper is to examine the core arguments of monism and dualism concerning the ontology of art and reflects on the potential impact of AI art on the existing theories. So far, the dualistic views of Wollheim and Levinson, which are sensitive to the common-sense perspectives of ordinary appreciators, have been regarded as more persuasive, while Currie’s monism, despite providing a simple and consistent account, has been criticized as a counterintuitive theory that lacks supporting examples. There are two elements within Currie’s theory which are responsible for the criticism:　first, that the artist is not a creator but rather a type-performer; and second, that a painting can have multiple tokens, just as a musical work can. With regard to these two elements, I argue that the AI artist is an ideal example of the ‘artist as type-performer’ and show that AI painting is ontologically similar to music. This means that the counterintuitive elements of Currie’s theory are, in fact, typical characteristics of AI art. In this way, I emphasize the necessity of reevaluating Currie’s theory in light of the emergence of AI art and seek to broaden the existing debate by connecting the characteristics of AI art to the traditional framework of monism versus dualism

본고는 예술작품 존재론과 관련하여 일원론과 이원론의 핵심 주장을 살펴보고, AI 예술의 등장이 기존 이론의 지형에 끼칠 수 있는 영향에 대해 고찰한다. 기존의 논쟁에서는 감상자들의 상식적 견해에 부합하는 볼하임이나 레빈슨의 이원론이 우세하다는 평가를 받아왔고, 커리의 일원론은 단순하고 일관적인 설명을 제공하지만 그에 부합하는 사례를 찾기 힘든 반직관적 이론이라는 비판을 받았다. 그러나 본고는 AI 예술의 등장과 함께 커리의 일원론이 재평가 될 수 있음을 지적한다. 커리의 일원론이 반직관적이라 비판받는 이유로 본고는 커리 이론의 다음과 같은 두 주장, 첫째, 예술가는 창작자가 아니라 타입 실행자이다, 둘째, 그림은 음악처럼 다수의 토큰을 가질 수 있다는 주장을 지목한다. 이어 본고는 AI 예술가는 ‘실행자로서의 예술가’의 전형이며, 또한 ‘AI 그림은 존재론적으로 음악과 상당히 비슷하다’는 점을 보임으로써, 커리 이론의 반직관적 요소는 오히려 AI 예술의 전형적 특성임을 주장한다. 즉 그 동안 이론에 부합하는 사례를 찾기 어렵다는 비판을 받았던 커리 이론이 AI 등장과 함께 지지 사례를 가지게 된다. 본고는 일원론적 타입 이론을 재평가할 수 있는 AI 예술의 등장에 주목할 필요성을 드러내고, 더 나아가 AI 예술의 특성을 기존의 일원론 대 이원론 대립 구도 안에 연결시킴으로써 기존의 논쟁을 업데이트하고 확장하고자 한다.
