The present is an age of passion. Individuals today do not pursue ontological truth, nor do they live ascetic lives to achieve universal good or realize communal morality. The modern ideals that Nietzsche criticized, namely ascetic ideals, are no longer the goal of this era. The contemporary people live to fulfill their own desires more than anything else. So, has the present gone beyond the decadence that Nietzsche pointed out? In fact, it has not. The present age is still an era of decadence. Why is that? From a Nietzschean perspective, the reason why the present is decadent is because, despite not pursuing asceticism and universal good, they still cannot affirm their own life as such. The materialism and meritocracy that the present people pursue are, in the end, just different in form, they are still negative forms of life, no different from the attitude toward life of modern people who pursue the ascetic ideal of life that Nietzsche criticized.Ultimately, the present people should not live a life where they prove their worth through materialism and meritocracy, but rather become people who can use them instrumentally for their own lives. This is the affirmation of life that can overcome suffering, and it can be said to be a healthy attitude toward life that strives for a better future. Of course, this attitude toward life cannot be achieved through individual effort alone. Rather than trying to protect the values that make us instrumental, our society should have a system that helps each member live a life in which they can affirm their own life and look forward to a better future by making such values a tool for life. At that time, the contemporary people will be able to live as healthy human beings who can truly affirm themselves.

현대는 정념의 시대다. 오늘날의 개인들은 존재론적인 진리를 추구하지도, 보편적 선을 성취하거나 공동체적인 도덕을 실현하기 위해 금욕적 삶을 살지도 않는다. 니체가 비판했던 근대의 이상, 즉 금욕주의적 이상들은 더이상 이 시대의 목표가 아니다. 현대인들은 다른 무엇보다 자신의 욕구 실현을 위해 살아가고 있다. 그러면 현대는 니체가 지적했던 데카당을 넘어선 것인가? 사실 그렇지 않다. 현대는 여전히 데카당스의 시대다. 왜 그런가?니체적인 관점에서 현대가 데카당인 이유는 이들이 금욕주의와 보편적 선을 추구하지 않음에도 불구하고 여전히 자신의 삶을 그 자체로 긍정하지 못하기 때문이다. 현대인들이 추구하는 물질주의와 능력주의는 결국 형태만 바뀌었을 뿐, 니체가 비판했던 삶의 부정적 형식으로서의 금욕주의적 이상을 추구하는 근대인들의 삶의 태도와 전혀 달라진 것이 없는, 여전히 삶에대한 부정적 형식인 것이다.결국 현대인들은 물질주의와 능력주의를 통해 자신의 가치를 증명하는 삶이 아니라, 자신의 삶을 위해 그것들을 도구적으로 활용할 수 있는 인간이 되어야 한다. 그것이야말로 고통을 극복할 수 있는 삶의 긍정이며, 더 나은 미래를 위해 노력하며 살아가는 건강한 삶의 태도라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 물론 이러한 삶의 태도는 그저 개인의 노력만으로 성취할 수 있는 것은 아니다. 우리 사회는 자신을 도구적으로 만드는 가치들을 지키기 위해 노력할 것이 아니라, 그런 가치들을 삶의 도구로 만들어 각각의 구성원들이 자신의 삶을 긍정하고 더 나은 미래를 기대할 수 있는 삶을 살 수 있도록 도움을 주는 체계를 갖추어야 할 것이다.
