What did Aristotle think about erōs, which means physical love? This paper is basically an exploration of this question. However, here we will deal with love not in the context of ontology nor in natural philosophy, but in the context of ethics and politics, where Aristotle discussed friendship(philia). The problem is that Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics and Politics, which describe human behavior and happiness, the state(polis) and good life, contain only fragmentary mentions about physical love or erōs. Nevertheless, this study will show that there are some significant mentions on erōs in Aristotle, and that there is an important context in which they are connected with the discussions of philia, and finally that these discussions about love and friendship have significant implications for social relations in Aristotle’s practical philosophy.

육체적 사랑(erōs)에 대해서 아리스토텔레스는 어떤 생각을 가지고 있었을까? 본논문은 기본적으로 이 물음에 대한 연구이다. 다만, 여기서는 존재론이나 자연철학의 맥락이아니라, 아리스토텔레스가 우애(philia)에 대해 논의한 윤리학과 정치학의 맥락에서 사랑을다루기로 한다. 문제는 아리스토텔레스가 인간의 행위와 행복, 국가와 좋은 삶에 대해 논의한『니코마코스 윤리학』이나 『정치학』에 육체적 사랑에 관한 이야기가 단편적으로만 나온다는것이다. 본 연구는 그럼에도 불구하고 아리스토텔레스의 텍스트에서 육체적 사랑에 대한 의미있는 언급들이 없지 않으며, 그것들이 우애에 관한 논의와 연결되는 중요한 맥락이 있다는 점, 그리고 이 사랑과 우애에 관한 논의들이 아리스토텔레스의 실천 철학에서 사회적 관계를드러내는 중요한 함의를 가진다는 사실을 보여줄 것이다.
