The academic status of sports philosophy as an applied discipline is determined by its relationship with its parent discipline, philosophy in general. Sports philosophy can be evaluated as having a low academic status because it has only unilaterally accepted philosophical theories. In order for sports philosophy to improve its academic status, its research results must be accepted by philosophy. To this end, qualitative improvement of sports philosophy research is required. In order for the quality of sports philosophy research to improve, first, the truth claims must be clearly stated in the form of hypotheses in research results such as related papers, books, and conference presentations. Second, the truth claimed here must herald the birth of new knowledge. Third, established theories, must be accepted to justify the truth claims. Fourth, in accepting philosophical theories, they must be accepted actively, such as creative transformation through symbolic struggle, rather than simply mobilizing or passively citing them.

응용 학문으로서 스포츠 철학의 학문적 위상은 모학문인 철학 일반과 의 관계에 의해 결정된다. 스포츠 철학은 철학 이론을 일방적으로 수용 만 해왔다는 점에서 그 학문적 위상이 낮다고 평가할 수 있다. 스포츠 철학이 학문적 위상을 제고하기 위해서는 그 연구 성과가 철학 일반에 도 수용될 수 있어야만 한다. 이를 위해서는 스포츠 철학 연구의 질적 향상이 요구된다. 스포츠 철학 연구의 질이 향상되기 위해서는 첫째, 스 포츠 철학 관련 논문, 학술서적, 학술대회 발표문 등과 같은 연구 성과에 진리 주장이 가설의 형식으로 분명하게 명시되어 있어야만 한다. 둘 째, 여기서 주장되는 진리는 새로운 지식의 탄생을 예고해야만 한다. 셋 째, 진리 주장을 정당화하기 위해 정립된 이론, 특히 철학 분야의 정립 된 이론을 수용해야만 한다. 넷째, 철학 이론을 수용하는 데 있어서 단 순하게 동원하거나 가라사대 식의 수동적 인용이 아니라 상징 투쟁을 통한 창조적 변용과 같이 능동적 인용이 이루어져야만 한다. 스포츠 철 학의 연구 성과가 이러한 조건을 충족할 때 그 학문적 질은 개선될 것으로 기대된다.
