Buan-eup started out as a center of Dongdo-myeon and Hadong-myeon of Buan-hyeon during the Joseon Dynasty. Afterwards, it was integrated into Buyeong-myeon(1914) and promoted to Buan-eup(1943). It currently consists of 91 administrative villages in 12 legal villages. This study examines the origin and meaning of the villages that make up Buan-eup. The purpose of place name research is to expand and preserve the historical and cultural data of a village. It also contributes to correcting errors that may arise when assigning new place names. To this end, we examined geographical records from the Joseon Dynasty, such as the 『Sinjeung Donggukyeojiseungram』, 『Donggukyeojiji』, 『Yejidoseo』, and 『Hoguchongsu』. We also reviewed local data such as 『Buanji』, 『Hongjae Ilgi』, 『Minjang Chibuchaek』, 『Bongraesan Ilgi』, and old documents. We also inspected place name data from the Japanese colonial period, such as the list of 『Catalogue of Administrative Names of Korean Empire』, 『Catalogue of New and Ancient Village Names of Administrative districts in Korea』, 『JijiJoseo』 and maps. In addition, we investigated the changes in place names by tracking modern place name research data such as the 『Jimyeong Josacheol』, 『the Korean Place Names Encyclopedia』, and 『the Jeonbuk Traditional Place Names Encyclopedia』. As a result, it was found that the basic place name of Buan-eup maintained its tradition. The consolidation of counties and towns promoted by the Japanese in 1914 was done without the consent of local residents. The reorganization of the unique living area had a significant social and cultural impact. After liberation, the already established local administrative system was used without improvement, and the need for revision of Japanese place names became more prominent. Therefore, there is a strong tendency to view the currently used place names as targets for liquidation. However, it has been confirmed that the basic place name of Buan-eup has a strong aspect of having been created and maintained a long time ago.

부안읍은 조선시대 부안현의 東道面과 下東面을 중심으로 출발하였다. 이후 1914년에 扶寧面으로 통합되었고, 1943년에 부안읍으로 승격되었다. 현재 12개 법정리에 91개의 행정 마을을 이루고 있다. 본 연구는 부안읍 구성 마을의 유래와 의미를 살핀다. 지명 조사는 마을의 역사・문화적 자료를 확대・보존하는 것이다. 아울러 새로운 지명 부여 때 생길 오류를 시정하는데도 기여한다. 이를 위해 『신증동국여지승람』・『동국여지지』・『여지도서』・『호구총수』 등의 조선시대 지리 기록을 살폈다. 또 『부안지』・『홍재일기』・『민장치부책』・『봉래산일기』 및 고문서 등의 지역 자료로 검토했다. 그리고 『지방행정구역명칭일람』・『신구대조조선전도부군면리동명칭일람』・『지지조서』와 지도 등의 일제 시기 지명 자료도 점검했다. 더불어 『지명조사철』・『한국지명총람』・『전북전래지명총람』 등의 현대 지명 조사 자료까지 추적하여 지명의 변화상을 알아보았다. 그 결과 부안읍의 기초 지명은 전통성을 유지하는 것으로 판명되었다. 1914년에 일제가 추진한 군・면 통폐합은 지역민의 동의가 없었다. 고유 생활권의 새로운 재편으로 사회・문화적 영향이 컸다. 해방 이후 기 구축된 지방 행정 체계가 개선되지 않고 사용되어 일제의 지명 개정이 더욱 부각되었다. 따라서 현재 사용 지명들을 청산해야 할 대상으로 보는 경향이 있다. 하지만 부안읍의 기초 지명은 고래로 생성・유지되어 온 측면이 강하다는 것이 확인된다.
