This study discusses the future of trade finance using blockchain technology. Virtual currency has the characteristics of an asset rather than a currency, so it is difficult to have a significant impact on the payment system. However, blockchain technology is a core technology that makes up virtual currency and can be viewed as an independent technology separate from virtual currency, and has the potential to be used in payment methods depending on trade transactions. Accordingly, this study examined changes in the international payment system due to regionalism and analyzed the case of TradeLens, which utilized blockchain technology in connection with the supply chain. Additionally, the possibility of using blockchain in trade finance was discussed from the perspective of the data economy. New payment systems are emerging that replace SWIFT, the existing international payment system. At the same time, the environment of the international financial market is rapidly changing as the use of digital payment methods expands. By analyzing specific cases in these environmental changes, the use, performance, and implications of blockchain technology for the global supply chain can be summarized as follows. By incorporating blockchain technology into its internal supply chain management, Walmart was able to quickly share information, track products, and thoroughly manage their history. On the other hand, TradeLens provided a shipping platform service using blockchain technology, but due to fierce competition within the shipping industry, mutual trust relationships were not formed, making it difficult to actively share information. In the end, the service was terminated due to not meeting a sufficient number of participating companies. Through specific cases like these, we can understand that blockchain is an innovative technology, which can be fully utilized in supply chain management or trade finance. However, if there is a lack of mutual trust depending on political and economic interests, it may be difficult to sufficiently secure the network effect because participation is excluded or data sharing is not transparent.

본 연구는 블록체인 기술을 활용한 무역금융의 미래에 대해 논의하고 있다. 가상화폐는 통화보다는 자산의 성격을 갖고 있어 결제시스템에 유의한 영향을 미치기 어렵다. 하지만 블록체인 기술은 가상화폐를 구성하는 핵심적인 기술로 가상화폐와 분리된 독립적 기술로 파악할 수 있 으며, 무역거래에 따라 결제방식에 활용될 가능성이 있다. 이에 본 연구는 지역주의에 따른 국제결제시스템의 변화를 살펴보고 블록체인 기술 을 공급사슬와 연계하여 활용한 TradeLens의 사례를 분석하였다. 이를 통해 데이터 경제의 관점에서 무역금융에서 블록체인의 활용 가능성에 대해 고찰하였다. 기존의 국제결제시스템인 SWIFT를 대체하는 결제시스템이 등장하고, 디지털 지급수단의 사용이 확대되면서 국제금융시장의 환경이 빠르 게 변화하고 있다. 이러한 환경변화 속에서 구체적인 사례를 분석하여 글로벌 공급망에 대한 블록체인 기술의 활용과 성과, 시사점을 요약하면 다음과 같이 정리할 수 있다. TradeLens는 블록체인 기술을 활용한 해운 플랫폼 서비스를 제공하였지만 해운 산업 내에서 치열한 경쟁이 있어 상호신뢰 관계가 형성되지 않은 상태여서 정보의 공유가 기업의 잠재적 리스크로 이어질 가능성이 있었다. 이러한 위험성은 기업들의 참여를 제한하였으며, 결국 충분한 참여기업의 수를 충족하지 못하고 서비스를 종료하게 되었다. 블록체인은 공급망 관리나 무역금융에 있어서 충분 히 활용할 수 있는 혁신적인 기술로 평가할 수 있다. 하지만 정치·경제적 이해관계에 따라 상호신뢰 형성이 부족할 경우 참여를 배제하거나 데 이터 공유가 투명하게 이루어지지 못해 네트워크 효과를 충분히 확보하기 어려울 수 있다.
