Traditionally, biblical interpretation has been conducted through the three axes of author, text, and reader. The problem is that the influence of the Western rationalistic world view treats the Bible not as a testimony concerning the history of salvation, but merely as a document. Previous methods of biblical interpretation have generally focused on historical, literary, and theological approaches. The Bible serves as a tool for enacting God's covenant and as a redemptive testimony, and the unity of God’s covenants being fulfilled provides a framework for biblical preaching. Nevertheless, there has been a lack of pragmatic preaching concerning the literary segments of various biblical texts, particularly in relation to specific narratives in the Old Testament. Kuruvilla refers to the world projected to readers as a pragmatic referent as ‘the world unfolding in front of the text.’ This ‘the world unfolding in front of the text’ reveals how God relates to His creations and leads to relevant applications for contemporary audiences. This application represents a pragmatic referent that realizes the transhistorical and future-oriented intentions of the text. Kuruvilla defines ‘the world unfolding in front of the text’ as the theology of the pericope that depicts God’s holy intentions toward His people. It encapsulates transhistorical intentions and guides God's people to respond correctly to the text. Therefore, the researcher seeks to present Genesis 44, which provides a significant link for pragmatic interpretation concerning the audience's ‘the perlocutionary act,’ through the narrative of Joseph. In biblical interpretation, it is proposed to suggest a balanced interpretation of the "narrative of questioning Joseph's brothers" as an encounter event, following a Christological interpretation based on pericope theology and a perspective of sanctification in preaching.
