As Christianity is passed down through generations, the phenomenon of nominal Christianity arises. In Western Christianity, there have been ministerial approaches as well as statistical attempts to address nominal Christians, with the Lausanne Movement prominently defining and providing ministry strategies for them. In the Korean context, distinguishing nominal Christians can only be estimated through more complex questions about their religious awareness and practices. Additionally, it is necessary to consider whether the questions used to identify nominal Christians in Western Christianity, particularly in the United States, are suitable for Korean culture. For example, this study used the assurance of salvation rather than the experience of being born again as a criterion, and it excluded “Canaan believers,”(the dechurched) who have existed as a distinct category, from the type of nominal Christians. To establish the concept of nominal Christianity, the research was conducted based on three criteria: religious consciousness, religious practice, and religious identity, targeting church attendees. It was found that 39.5% of the respondents fell into the category of nominal Christians. Furthermore, their characteristics were cross-analyzed by faith stages, age, offerings and service, roles within the church, attitudes towards key religious themes, and ethical issues, aiming to reflect on the meaning of true conversion and evangelism.

기독교가 전래되어 세대가 흐르면 명목상 기독교 현상이 발생한다. 서구 기독교에서는 명목상 기독교인에 대한 사역적 접근 뿐 아니라 통계 적 시도가 있었고, 대표적으로 로잔운동은 명목상 기독교인에 대한 정의 와 사역을 제시해왔다. 한국적 상황에서 명목상 기독교인을 구분하는 것 은 그들의 신앙 인식과 생활에 대한 더욱 복합적인 질문을 통해서 추정 할 수 있을 뿐이다. 또한 서구 기독교, 특히 미국에서 명목상 기독교인을 식별하기 위해 사용된 질문들이 한국의 문화에 부합되는지에 대한 고려 도 필요하다. 예를 들어, 이번 연구에서는 중생의 경험 여부 보다는 구원 의 확신을 기준으로 사용했고, 그동안 독자적인 범주로 존재해 온 가나 안 성도는 명목상 기독교인 유형에서 제외시켰다. 이번 명목상 기독교인 개념 정립을 위한 연구는 신앙 의식 영역, 신앙생활 영역, 신앙 정체성 영역이라는 세 가지 기준을 토대로 교회 출석자들을 대상으로 진행되었 으며, 이들 가운데 39.5%가 명목상 기독교인의 범주에 해당되는 것으로 나타났다. 더 나아가, 이들의 특성을 신앙단계, 연령, 헌금 및 봉사, 직분, 신앙의 주요 주제들과 윤리적 이슈들에 대한 태도로 교차 분석하여 진정한 회심과 전도의 의미를 성찰하는 계기로 삼고자 했다.
