This study was conducted to examine the labor experience, value system, and labor characteristics of web novel writers who form a group and each write their own web novel. The researcher joined , an online and offline writing group, around March 2022 and began participant observation. From June 15, 2024, to July 10, 2024, the researcher received detailed the auto-ethnography from 18 web novel writers. It was analyzed in combination with other qualitative data. As a result of the study, first, web novel writers mostly by self-study enter the web novel market dreaming of becoming ‘a writer who earns 40 million won a month’ or ‘a writer who makes 10 billion won in profit from one work.’ However, in reality, the lack of income or the income is so irregular that it causes severe anxiety. Second, in order to survive in the world of web novels, web novel writers place commercial value as the highest value and produce web novels while observing readers' preferences and recent trends. Third, , a voluntary web novel writing group, was playing the role of a 'window of information' and leading novice web novel writers into the world of web novels in the absence of a systematically established web novel writer training institution. Fourth, the web novel writing group is a gathering of people who have experienced all kinds of worries and wanderings while writing web novels alone, creating ‘a personal connection’ for web novel writers, ‘sharing information’ they did not know, and ‘engaging in friendly competition’ and was found to be a meeting for ‘emotional support’. The writing group is a group created voluntarily by writers to survive as successful ‘commercial writers’ in a situation where the web novel market is growing rapidly but there are not many institutes that systematically train web novel writers. It can be seen as very meaningful. This study can be said to be significant in that the researcher examined the labor experiences of web novel writers who gathered together to write while conducting participant observation over a period of more than two years.

이 연구는 모여서 집필하는 웹소설 작가들의 노동 경험과 가치체계, 노동의 특성을 살펴보기 위해, 연구자가 2022년 3월경부터 온오프라인 집필 모임인 <글로별>에 가입하여 참여관찰을 시작하고 2024년 6월 15일부 터 2024년 7월 10일까지 18명의 웹소설 작가로부터 상세 자기기술지를 받아 다른 질적 자료들과 조합하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째 웹소설 작가들은 ‘한 달에 4천만 원을 버는 작가’, ‘한 작품으로 100억의 수익을 내는 작가’를 꿈꾸며 대부분 독학으로 웹소설 시장에 진입하지만, 실제로는 수입이 없거나 너무 불규칙해서 심한 불안감을 겪게 된다. 둘째, 웹소설 작가들은 웹소설의 세계에서 생존하기 위해 상업성을 최고의 가치로 두고 독자들의 선호와 최근 트렌드를 살피며 웹소설을 생산하고 있었다. 성공하기 위해 ‘장인 정신과 장사꾼’ 의 모습을 동시에 지녀야 한다고도 생각하고 있었는데 그 과정에서 자기 착취적인 고된 노동에 시달리는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 자발적인 웹소설 집필 모임 <글로별>은 웹소설 작가 양성기관이 체계적으로 확립되어 있지 않은 상태에서 ‘정보의 창구’ 역할을 하면서 초보 웹소설 작가들을 웹소설의 세계로 이끌어주고 있었다. 넷째, 웹소설 집필 모임 <글로별>은 혼자 웹소설을 쓰면서 온갖 고민과 방황을 해본 사람들이 모인 곳으로 웹소설 작가들에게 ‘인맥’을 만들어 주고 ‘몰랐던 정보를 공유하고 선의의 경쟁’을 하고 있었으며 ‘정신적 의지’를 하는 곳으로 밝혀졌다. 모임에 나와 각자 자신의 작품을 집필하면서도 서로의 작품에 대해 조언을 해주고 고민을 함께하면서 작가들 스스로 성장하는 것으로 보인다. 집필 모임 <글로별>은 웹소설 시장이 급속하게 성장하고 있지만 웹소설 작가를 체계적으로 양성하는 곳이 부족한 상황에서, 성공하는 ‘상업작가’ 로 살아남기 위해 작가들이 자발적으로 만든 모임이라는 점에 매우 의미가 있다고 볼 수 있다. 이 연구는 연구자가 2년이 넘는 시간 동안 참여관찰을 하면서 모여서 집필하는 웹소설 작가들의 노동 경험 등을 살펴봤 다는 점에서 의의가 있다고 할 수 있지만, 집필 모임을 중심으로 연구가 진행되어 웹소설 작가들의 성공 여부나 수입 구간별로 차별화될 수 있는 노동인식이나 성향체계 등은 담지 못한 한계를 가지고 있다.
