The objective of this study is to examine the academic contributions of theatrical scholar Richard Schechner(1934- ) through his performance theory. In the present era, the term “performance” is employed in a multitude of contexts, rendering the task of defining it with a single meaning a challenging one. Schechner, who was instrumental in popularizing the term, defined performance as human “action” or “behavior,” and asserted that the primary objective of performance theory is to examine this concept. Schechner thus broadened the definition of performance to encompass not only artistic expression but also human behavior and social interaction. By reinterpreting performance in a manner that differs from traditional forms, Schechner gained a unique reputation, and his performance theory significantly influenced the performing arts from the 1960s through the 1990s. As the founder of the neo-avant-garde theatre movement, Schechner was instrumental in expanding the boundaries of theatre through his commitment to a performance theory based on the concept of performativity. He introduced the concept of environmental theatre, which extended performances beyond traditional theatre spaces and into various environments where spectators actively participate, making him a living witness to process-based theatre. This ironmental theatre emphasized direct interaction with the spectator, providing a new perspective on the relationship between performer and spectator. Moreover, Schechner did not rest on his laurels. As a theatre anthropologist and sociologist, he developed a systematic approach to performance theory within a socio-cultural context, emphasising the importance of ritualistic acts and communal experiences. His theoretical and practical contributions broadened the conceptual boundaries of performance art to encompass everyday human actions within the domain of artistic expression. This study examines the process by which Schechner's performance theory gained academic recognition and evaluates its impact on contemporary performing arts and social behavior. In doing so, it seeks to elucidate the expansive nature and cultural implications of performance theory.
