The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of Great Unity (大同), the main contents of the Society of Great Unity (大同 社會), and to explore the possibility of realizing the Society of Great Unity in modern society. The goal of Confucianism is to realize the ideal society of the Society of Great Unity through the restoration of the nature of ‘benevolence, righteousness, propriety and wisdom’ of individuals and the harmony of the entire society. The Society of Great Unity has a certain degree of reality in that it considers the world not to be owned by individuals but by everyone, selects wise and capable talents essential to raising the moral level of members of society and realizing happiness, creates a harmonious atmosphere based on mutual trust, and emphasizes consideration for the socially disadvantaged so that no one is left out. In order for the Society of Great Unity presented in Confucianism to be realized, it needs rational attitudes that harmoniously embrace reality and ideals such as restoration of the nature of ‘benevolence, righteousness, propriety and wisdom’ through personal cultivation, realization of moral society through humanity education, creating an atmosphere that values trust and natural harmony among members, resolving economic inequality and establishing a social safety net, and pursuing a harmonious relationship between humans and nature, etc.

본 논문의 목적은 대동(大同)의 의미, 대동사회(大同社會)의 주요 내용을 고찰하고, 현대사회에서 대동사회 실현 가능성을 탐색하는 데 있다. 유교의 목표는 개인의 인의예지 본성 회복과 사회 전체의 조화를 통해 대동사회라는 이상 사회를 실현하는 데 있다. 대동사회는 천 하가 개인 소유가 아니고 모두의 것이라고 여기는 점, 사회 구성원의 도덕적 수준을 높이고 행복을 실현하는 데 필수적인 현명하고 능력 있 는 인재 선출, 서로 간에 신뢰(信賴)를 바탕으로 화목한 분위기 조성, 소외된 사람이 없도록 사회적 약자에 대한 배려를 중시하고 있다는 측 면에서 어느 정도 현실성을 가지고 있다. 유교에서 제시하는 대동사회 가 실현되기 위해서는 개인의 수양을 통한 인의예지 본성 회복, 인성 교육을 통한 도덕 사회 구현, 구성원 간의 신뢰와 자연스러운 조화를 중시하는 분위기 조성, 경제적 불평등 해소 및 사회 안전망 구축, 인간 과 자연의 조화로운 관계 추구 등 현실과 이상을 조화롭게 아우르는 합리적인 자세가 필요하다.
