This study explores the role and significance of embodying Jeonuchi, the main character of Jeonuchi-jeon, in the context of the 19th century and the readers’ experiences. In a world where people struggle to manage their own lives, Jeonuchi emerges as a fictional figure endowed with immense power. He listens to people’s woes, offers paths to redemption even for those who have sinned, and addresses governmental issues and crises. Jeonuchi represents the alternative force needed in those times; however, he is also an outlaw and a renegade who enforces his own brand of justice, unrestrained by legal frameworks or existing ethical standards, especially when legitimate power becomes unjust. Readers, aware that even actions with noble intentions can turn violent to maintain their own power and interests, feel uneasy about Jeonuchi, who wields unpredictable power outside the law. Concerns that Jeonuchi might become akin to the very power he opposes if his sense of justice is ineffective led to the creation of mechanisms to monitor and balance this new force. The various alternative powers that exist and compete in everyday life enable readers to confidently engage with the world of Jeonuchi-jeon. Thus, Jeonuchi-jeon navigates the tension between expectations and apprehensions regarding alternative powers, offering insights into private justice and authority.

본 연구에서는 <전우치전>을 대상으로 19세기의 시대적 상황과 향유층의 경험을 고려하면서 전우치의 형상화 양상과 의미를 살펴보았다. 나라의 기능이 무너져 개인들이 살아남기 힘든 현실이 불러낸 전우치는 압도적인 능력으로 사람들의 애환과 원통한 사연을 들어주고 살 길은 열어주며 조정의 병폐와 위기를 해결하는 상상태이다. 전우치는 시대가 필요로 한 대안적 존재이지만, 현실 권력이 정의롭지 못한 상황에서 법질서나 기존 윤리에 얽매이지 않고 자기 정의를 내세워 문제를 해결하는 무법자이자 범법자이기도 하다. 의로운 명분을 내건 세력도 자기 권력의 유지와 욕망을 위해서 폭력적으로 변할 수 있다는 향유자들의 경험치는 예측불가능한 힘으로 법 밖에서 활동하는 전우치에 대한 불안감의 기저를 이루었다. 전우치가 자기 정의의 실현에 효능감을 느끼지 못할 때 그 역시 기존 권력과 다르지 않은 모습으로 변할 수 있다는 우려는 새로운 권력을 감시하고 견제할 존재를 마련하게 했다. 일상의 곳곳에 숨어서 경쟁하는 복수의 대안 세력은 독자들이 안심하고 <전우치전>의 세계를 들여다보도록 한다. 이처럼 <전우치전>은 사적 제제와 권력에 대한 통찰을 통해 대안 세력에 대한 기대와 불안의 긴장 상태를 해소하고 있다.
