This paper endeavors to examine the inquiring tendencies present in computing textbooks utilized within the primary school curriculum of the United Kingdom. Specifically, it centers on two distinct categories of computing textbooks, comprising a total of twelve volumes, encompassing six volumes published by the University of Oxford and six volumes published by the University of Cambridge. The primary objective is to conduct a thorough analysis of the inquiring tendencies inherent in these targeted textbooks. To achieve this, we first examined the trends in computing education in the United Kingdom through prior research. Subsequently, to quantitatively analyze the inquiring tendencies of the textbooks, we applied the Romey method. This involved scrutinizing the text, figure and diagram, activity, and question within the textbooks to extract pertinent data for analysis. The analysis revealed that the text of the two types of textbooks exhibited desirable inquiry-oriented characteristics. However, the diagrams and charts, activities, and questions demonstrated an excessively inquiry-oriented nature. We anticipate that these research findings will provide a foundation for practical discussions on textbook development for the future establishment of an independent elementary information curriculum in South Korea.

본 논문은 영국의 초등학교 컴퓨팅 교과에서 사용되는 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 출판된 컴퓨팅 교과서 6권과 케임브리지 대 학교의 컴퓨팅 교과서 6권, 총 12권을 포함하는 컴퓨팅 교과서 2종을 대상으로 하며, 대상 교과서의 탐구 성향을 분석하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 우선 선행 연구를 통해 영국의 컴퓨팅 교육의 동향을 파악했으며, 교과서의 탐구 성향 분석 을 정량적으로 분석하기 위해 Romey 기법을 접목하여 교과서의 본문, 그림 및 도표, 활동, 질문을 분석에 활용하였다. 분석 결과, 교과서 2종의 본문은 바람직한 탐구적 성향으로 구성되어 있었으나, 그림 및 도표, 활동, 질문은 과도하게 탐구 지향 적인 성격을 지니고 있었다. 이러한 연구 결과를 반영하여, 궁극적으로 향후 대한민국의 초등 정보 단독 교과 신설 시, 교 과서 개발을 위한 실천적 논의에 단초를 제공할 수 있기를 희망한다.
