This paper examines the aspects and meanings of the children's community in the 5·18 historical fairy tales "The Neighborhood Next to the Train Road", "May Run", and "Our May News". This started from the critical mind of the limitations of the 5·18 historical fairy tales that mainly go through family history and limit 5·18 to the narrative of the death and sadness of innocent victims. "The Neighborhood Next to the Train Road" concludes that through the night school community, children's characters are re-established as the main players of the future by putting them in a position where they have to answer questions from history, and "May Run" has the meaning of a growth narrative in which members of the activist community shift from a relationship of competition to a relationship of friendship. "Our May News" puts the learning group community at the forefront and raises the question of whether our daily democracy is progressing. In their works, the setting of children's focus speakers, which stems from the essential characteristics of historical fairy tales, has certain limitations, but they overcome the limitations of family history narratives to some extent, embodying the ethical consciousness and the meaning and spirit of democratization of the community, which are the core values of 5·18. 5·18 narrative will extend beyond the history of Gwangju to historical sanctions to protect the universal rights of humans.

본고는 5·18 역사동화 『기찻길 옆 동네』, 『오월의 달리기』, 『우리들의 오월 뉴스』에 나타난 어린이 공동체의 양상과 의미를 살펴보고 있다. 이는 그간의 5·18 역사동화들이 주로 가족사를 경유하며 5·18을 무고한 피해자의 죽음과 슬픔의 서사로 한정 짓는 한계에 대한 문제의식에서 출발했다. 『기찻길 옆 동네』는 야학 공동체를 통해 어린이 인물들을 역사의 질문에 응답해야 하는 자리에 세워 미래의 주역으로 재정립하는 결론을 보여주며 『오월의 달리기』는 운동 공동체의 성원들이 경쟁의 관계에서 우정의 관계로 전환하는 성장서사의 의미를 가진다. 『우리들의 오월 뉴스』는 모둠 공동체를 전면에 배치해 현재 우리 일상의 민주주의는 진전되고 있는가라는 문제를 제기한다. 역사동화의 본질적 특성에서 비롯되는 어린이 초점화자는 이들 작품에서도 일정한 한계를 내포하지만 가족사 서사의 한계를 어느 정도 극복하며, 5·18의 핵심적 가치라 할 수 있는 공동체의 윤리의식과 민주화의 의미와 정신을 구현해 내고 있다. 앞으로의 5·18 서사는 관습적인 광주를 넘어서 인간의 보편적인 권리를 지켜내기 위한 역사적 제재로 확장되기를 기대한다.
