This study examines whether research based spin-off companies through commercialization of public technologies in Innopolis outperform (Part 1) and identifies internal and external factors that influence their growth (Part 2). In Part 1, we compare sales growth between research based spin-off companies and general technology-based start-ups up to six years after their founding. According to the results, research based spin-off companies show higher sales growth than general technology start-ups. In Part 2, internal and external factors affecting the growth of research based spin-off companies are identified. As a result, internal factors of research based spin-off companies show that the smaller the firm size, the lower the age, and better the profitability are associated with higher sales growth. In terms of investment institutions at the time of start-up, there is no difference in growth rate between research based spin-off companies depending on investment by research institutions, universities, and other institutions. When comparing growth rates between regional Innopolises as a external factor, the average sales growth of research based spin-off companies in the Daedeok Innopolis is the lowest. This study provides policy and strategic implications for fostering research based spin-off companies.

본 연구는 연구소기업의 성장 수준과 이에 영향을 미치는 요인을 파악하는 것을 목적 으로 한다. 구체적으로, 연구개발특구에서 우수 공공기술 사업화로 설립된 연구소기업 이 실제로 우수한 성과를 거두고 있는지를 검증(Part 1)하고, 연구소기업 성장에 영향 을 미치는 내부적·외부적 요인을 파악(Part 2)한다. Part 1에서는 2011-2019년 사 이 설립된 연구소기업과 일반 기술기반창업기업의 창업 후 6년까지의 매출성장률을 비 교한다. 분석 결과에 따르면, 연구소기업은 일반 기술창업기업에 비해 높은 매출성장률 을 보인다. Part 2에서는 연구소기업만을 대상으로 기업 성장에 영향을 미치는 내부· 외부적 요인을 파악한다. 분석 결과, 연구소기업의 내부적 요인으로 기업 규모가 작을 수록, 업력이 낮을수록, 수익성이 좋을수록 높은 매출성장률을 보인다. 창업 당시 출자 기관 측면에서 연구기관 출자, 대학 출자 및 기타기관 출자(기술지주회사 등)에 따른 연구소기업 간 성장률 차이는 나타나지 않는다. 아울러, 기업 외부적 요인으로 지역 연 구개발특구 간 성장률을 비교하였을 때, 대덕 연구개발특구 내 기업의 평균 매출성장률 이 가장 낮다. 본 연구 결과는 우수 공공기술 사업화를 위해 연구소기업 역할이 강조되 고 있는 현시점에서 연구소기업 육성을 위한 정책적, 전략적 시사점을 제공할 수 있다.
