I analyzed evaluation results of Jingke in Joseon dynasty, and considered its signification. First, all evaluators made efforts in their own way to suggest methods for resolution of social dislocation or danger. They showed evaluation results of Jingke affair as a basis to support the methods. Second, evaluators that stated Jingke as a person to threaten king or the existence of a country, evaluated negatively Jingke paying attention to fragmentary results namely subversive acts of Jingke affair. They pursued their comfortable lives rather than social qualitative change through efforts of ego and others. Third, evaluators that described Jingke as a person to lack the ability for realization of great tenor and a person to do his best to fulfill his duty, figured out the context and whole causes of Jingke affair, and evaluated positively Jingke that risked his neck to carry out the serious thing for peace in the world. They presented ability and attitude for solving social problem of Joseon, and anticipated that rule by virtue would be realized in Joseon. Fourth, significant evaluations of Jingke of the day were evaluation results that showed norms and virtues that members of society should comply facing problematic reality of Joseon.

본고에서는 조선의 지식인들이 형가를 평가한 내용들을 분석하고 그 의미를 고찰하였다. 첫째, 평가자들은 공통적으로 사회적 혼란이나 위험을 해결하기 위한 방안을 제시하기 위해 나름대로 노력하였다. 그리고 그 방안을 뒷받침하는 근거로 형가 사건을 평가한 결과를 보여 주었다. 둘째, 형가 사건 중 단편적 결과 즉 전복적 행위에만 주목하여 형가를 부정적으로 평가한 자들은, 형가를 군주 내지 나라의 존립을 위협한 자로 진술하였고 자아와 타인의 노력을 통한 사회의 질적 변화보다는 자신의 편안한 삶을 추구하였다. 셋째, 형가 사건의 전후 맥락과 요인 전반을 파악하고 천하의 평화를 위해 위험을 무릅쓰고 거사를 감행한 형가의 행적을 긍정적으로 평가한 자들은, 형가를 대의 실현을 위한 능력이 부족한 자 또는 도의를 다하기 위해 노력한 자로 서술하였고, 조선의 사회 문제를 해결할 수 있는 능력과 태도를 제시하며 왕도 정치가 실현될 수 있기를 기대하였다. 끝으로 당대에 유의미한 형가 평가는 왕도 정치의 실현을 위해 사회의 문제적 현실을 직시하고 사회의 구성원으로서 준수해야 할 규범이나 덕목을 제시한 내용들이었다.
