This study explores the theoretical utility of the concepts of diaspora theory and diasporic identity as a frame for understanding Korean newcomers in Japan. I consider diaspora as a dynamic phenomenon, or process, that occurs historically and temporally within a structure composed of diasporic subjects, their homeland, and their country of residence. Understanding diaspora as a process has the advantage that it allows us to see how migrants actively participate in the process of migration, how agency is formed, and how political power attempts to influence that process. It also allows us to analyze the formation of the variable and diverse identities that diasporas create through the above processes. I argue that examining the migration experiences of Korean newcomers in Japan through the concept of diaspora can explain the process by which Korean newcomers, who are living in a globalized world and partly carrying the legacy of the colonial era, are actively forming their own national identities. Diasporic identity also allows us to understand the various social identities that Korean newcomers in Japan are creating through their active coexistence and participation in Japanese society.

본 연구에서는 뉴커머 재일 한국인을 이해하기 위한 프레임으로서 디아스포라 론 및 디아스포라 아이덴티티의 개념이 가지는 유용성과 한계에 관해 살펴보았다. 연구자는 디아스포라를 디아스포라의 주체와 조국 및 거주국으로 구성된 구조 내 에서 개개의 이민 또는 그 집단이 그들에게 영향을 행사하는 정치권력과 상호작용 을 함으로 인해 일어나는 동적 현상(프로세스)으로 간주하고 있다. 디아스포라를 프로세스의 개념으로 이해하는 관점은 디아스포라의 전통적 개념인 민족과 민족 문화, 민족 정체성이 가진 고정성과 본질성으로부터 탈피하여 현실세계 속에서 일 어나는 변화와 재구축의 양상을 파악할 수 있다는 이점을 가진다. 또한 상기의 과 정을 통해 디아스포라가 창출하는 가변적이며 다양한 아이덴티티의 형성 과정을 고찰할 수 있다. 연구자는 뉴커머 재일 한국인의 이주 경험을 디아스포라 개념을 통해 고찰함으 로써 글로벌 시대를 살아가는 동시에 식민지 시대의 유산을 부분적으로 짊어지고 있는 뉴커머 재일 한국인이 다양한 민족 아이덴티티를 형성해 가는 과정을 설명할 수 있다고 주장한다. 또한 디아스포라 아이덴티티는 뉴커머 재일 한국인이 일본 사회와의 적극적 공존과 참여를 통해 창출하고 있는 복수의 사회적 아이덴티티를 이해할 수 있게 해 준다. 한편, 뉴커머 재일 한국인 커뮤니티의 약한 결집력 및 짧은 역사는 그들의 이주 를 이해하는데 있어 디아스포라론이 가지는 한계를 나타낸다. 아직 이민1세가 왕 성한 활동을 하고 있는 뉴커머 재일 한국인의 경험이 세대가 교체됨에 따라 어떻 게 전개될 것인지에 관한 지속적인 연구가 필요할 것이다.
