The purpose of this study is to examine the aspects of realization of Eros and Thanatos in modern ballet and their significance. The connection of life instinct and death instinct has been considered as a key concept for understanding the human unconscious, and the works of three major choreographers, Michel Fokine, Roland Petit and Jiri Kylian that dealt with this were examined. This motif was revealed in aspects encompassing a weakening of narrativity, and non-narrative approaches through symbolizing and imaging. Accordingly, it is not limited to the anachronistic narrative of love leading to death, but deals with implications of the dark and destructive aspects of the time such as existentialism or war. In conclusion, it can be said that as the Eros that emerged as an innovation in modern ballet has been explored and intensified along with its relationship with Thanatos, which has developed by diversifying its way of expression and allowed acquire contemporary meaning.

본 연구는 현대발레에 나타나는 에로스와 타나토스의 구현 양상과 그 의의를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 삶 의 본능과 죽음 본능의 연관성은 인간 무의식 이해를 위한 핵심적 개념으로 제시되었으며, 이 두 본능의 연관 성을 다룬 현대발레의 주요한 세 안무가인 미셸 포킨, 롤랑 프티, 지리 킬리안의 작품을 중심으로 검토하였다. 이 모티브의 구현은 서사성의 약화와 함께 상징화, 이미지화를 통한 비서사의 접근을 포괄하며, 이에 따라 죽 음에 이르는 사랑이라는 시대착오적 서사에 국한되지 않고 실존이나 전쟁과 같은 당대의 암울하고 파멸적인 국면의 암시를 다룰 수 있었다. 결론적으로 현대발레의 혁신으로써 부상한 에로스적 요소가 타나토스와의 관련 성과 함께 탐구되고 심화됨에 따라, 그 구현 방식을 다양화하고 동시대적 의미를 획득하며 발전해 왔다고 할 수 있다.
