The Sewol ferry sinking near Jindo, Jeollanam-do, on April 16, 2014, resulted in 304 fatalities out of 476 passengers, profoundly affecting South Korea. This study analyzes 360 research papers spanning 10 years (2014-2023) to guide disaster research in the post-Sewol era. Research initially flourished but declined after three years, with most studies being qualitative or review-based, particularly in the social sciences. The topics covered were diverse, including disaster management policies, mental health impacts, humanistic interpretations, legal aspects, theological perspectives, media, politics, and individual experiences. The study recommends continuous, systematic research on large-scale disasters like Sewol, advocating for budgetary support and interdisciplinary approaches. It aims to direct post-Sewol disaster research towards enhancing disaster safety systems and response mechanisms in the future.

2014년 4월 16일, 전남 진도 인근 세월호가 침몰하여 476명 중 304명이 목숨을 잃었고, 대한민국에 큰 충격을 안겼다. 본 연구는 2014년부터 2023년까지 약 10년간 진행된 세월호 관련 학술 연구 360편을 분석하여 재난 연구의 방향을 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 선별된 연구를 기반으로 문헌특성, 연구자 료, 연구방법 및 설계 등의 특성과 함께 주제고찰을 통한 내용분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 세월호 참사 초기 활발하게 연구가 이루어졌으나 이후 점차 연구가 줄어든 경향을 보였으며, 대부분의 연구가 질적이거나 리뷰 형태로 이루어진 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 사회과학 분야에서 다양한 주제가 다루어졌는 데, 재난 관리 정책, 정신 건강 영향, 인문적 해석, 법률적 측면, 신학적 관점, 언론 및 정치, 관련자 경험 등의 연구들이 이루어 졌음을 확인하였다. 이를 기반으로 세월호와 같은 대형 재난에 대한 연구가 지속적이고 체계적이어야 한다는 점을 강조하며, 연구 예산 지원과 학제간 접근을 촉구함을 제언하였다.
