About 60 suicides occur annually in the military, and suicide accounts for the largest proportion of all deaths in the military. In addition, the importance of preventing military suicide has increased due to the decrease in military resources and changes in the internal and external environment due to low birthrates. Therefore, elaborate prevention measures should be prepared based on more scientific and systematic analysis. Psychological autopsy is a scientific analysis of the psychological and behavioral characteristics of the dead, and is being actively studied to identify the cause of death and prevent suicide. Since the military introduced a psychological autopsy by the military's investigation committee in 2008, psychological autopsy has been mainly used by military investigative agencies to determine the cause of death. This study was conducted for the purpose of analyzing the actual state and problems of the use of psychological autopsy in military death cases and suggesting development plans. For the study, data surveys such as interviews with military investigative agency officials and psychological autopsy reports were conducted. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the use of psychological autopsy is mainly limited to the purpose of investigation and standardized procedures have not been established in the military. As a development plan for this, we suggested that the military psychological autopsy paradigm should be changed so that psychological autopsy can be used from the perspective of suicide prevention, and we also suggested improvement measures for each preparation/request stage, implementation stage, and utilization stage.

군대에서 사망사건이 발생하면 군뿐만 아니라 사회적으로도 많은 영향을 미친다. 군 사망사고 유형 중에서 자살이 가장 큰 비중을 차지하고 있기 때문에 군에서는 그동안 자살예방을 위한 다양한 정책들을 추진하여 왔고, 그 결과 군의 자살률은 사회의 자살률보다 낮게 나타나는 등 가시적인 성 과를 거두었다. 하지만 2023년 기준 최근 5년간 통계에 따르면 군에서 연간 60여건의 자살이 발생하 고 있으며, 군 전체 사망자 중에서 여전히 자살이 가장 많은 비중을 차지하고 있다. 또한 저출생에 따른 병력자원 감소와 초급간부 부족, 군사법원법 개정에 따른 3대 범죄 민간이관 등 대내·외 환경 변화로 인해 군 자살예방의 중요성은 더욱 증대되었다. 따라서 보다 과학적이고 체계적인 분석을 바 탕으로 정교한 예방대책을 마련해야 한다. 심리부검은 사망자의 심리·행동적 특성을 과학적으로 분 석하는 방법으로 사망원인 규명 및 자살예방을 위해 국·내외에서 활발하게 연구되고 있다. 군에서는 2008년 군의문사진상규명위원회에서 심리부검을 도입한 이래, 주로 군 수사기관을 중심으로 사망의 원인을 파악하기 위해 심리부검을 활용하고 있다. 본 연구는 군 사망사건에서 심리부검 활용실태와 문제점을 분석하고 발전방안을 제시하기 위한 목적으로 수행되었다. 군 심리부검 실태분석을 위해 군 수사기관 관계자에 대한 면담과 심리부검 보고서 등 자료조사를 시행하였다. 분석결과 군에서는 자살사건을 중심으로 심리부검을 활발하게 시행하고 있으나 심리부검의 활용이 주로 수사목적에만 한정되어 있고 표준화된 절차가 정립되지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 이에 대한 발전방안으로 자살예방 의 관점에서 심리부검을 활용할 수 있도록 군 심리부검 패러다임 전환 필요성과 함께 준비/의뢰단 계, 시행단계, 활용단계별 개선방안을 제시하였다.
