Fashion photography, as a representation created by photographers, serves the dual role of showcasing fashion and trends while reflecting the photographer's intent and purpose. Historically, male photographers have often depicted passive and objectified images of women in fashion photography. Since the 20th century, feminist theorists have sought to subvert the concept of women's otherness within a male-centric societal structure by reasserting female visibility and femininity. Psychoanalytic feminist theorist Irigaray criticized the phallocentrism inherent in the works of Freud and Lacan, emphasizing the importance of defining a distinct and independent femininity based on sexual difference. This study aims to identify trends in the representation of femininity in the fashion images created by female photographers, using Irigaray's theory as a central framework. The study established a theoretical framework for analyzing photographs through a review of Irigaray's theories. It examined the various expressions of femininity in these fashion images and interpreted them through Irigaray's theory of the "two lips." The findings of this research are as follows: First, self-affirmation and sexual expression were evident in the fashion photographs. Photographers portrayed diverse female bodies and expressed women's sexual allure naturally, beyond the confines of societal aesthetic standards. The "two lips" metaphor, symbolizing self-realization of sexual pleasure, can be interpreted as a representation of women's sexual desire and allure in the photographs. Second, themes of female solidarity and lesbianism were observed in the images. Photographers utilized elements such as space, props, physical contact between models, and real-life gender dynamics and relationships. The "two lips" metaphor can also be understood as representing contact between two women, interpreted as expressions of sisterhood and female intimacy. This study contributes to a new perspective in the analysis and interpretation of fashion images, offering insights into the diverse representations of femininity in art and media.

패션 사진은 사진작가에 의해 재현된 이미지로, 패션과 트렌드를 보여주는 역할을 수행하는 동시에 사진 작가의 의도와 목적을 반영한다. 과거, 남성 사진작가들은 패션 사진을 통해 수동적이고 타자화된 여성의 이미지를 연출해 왔다. 20세기 이후 페미니즘 이론가들은 남성 중심적인 사회 체계 속 가려진 여성의 존재와 여성성을 다시 드러내어 여성의 타자성을 전복시키려는 시도를 하였다. 정신분석 페미니즘 이론가 뤼스 이리 가라이는 지그문트 프로이트와 자크 라캉의 정신분석학 속 남근 중심주의를 비판하며, 여성과 남성의 성차를 기반으로 남성과는 구분된 독립적이고 특수한 여성성을 정의 내리는 것의 중요성을 강조하였다. 본 연구는 여성성을 재정의하고자 하였던 이리가라이의 페미니즘 이론을 중심으로 여성 사진작가의 패션 이미지에 나 타난 여성성 표현 경향을 확인하는 데 목적을 두고 수행되었다. 연구 수행을 위해 이리가라이의 이론을 고찰 하여 사진 분석에 대한 이론적 틀을 마련하였다. 이후 사진 분석을 목적으로 여성 패션 사진작가 10인을 선정 하고 860장의 이미지를 수집하였다. 수집된 이미지를 대상으로 패션 이미지에 나타난 다양한 여성성의 표현 을 확인하고 이리가라이의 ‘두 입술’ 이론을 바탕으로 여성성 표현을 해석하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 패션 사진에 자기긍정, 성적 표현의 표현이 나타나는 것이 확인되었다. 사진작가는 사회적인 미적 기준 이 아닌 다양한 여성 신체를 사진을 통해 재현하거나 여성의 성적 매력을 자연스럽게 표현하였다. ‘두 입술’ 은 맞닿아 있는 형상과 같이 스스로 성적 쾌락을 실현하고 여성성으로 해석된다. 패션 사진 속 여성 표현은 ‘두 입술’ 이론에서 나타나는 고유함과 복수성을 지닌 여성의 성적 욕망과 매력 표현으로 해석될 수 있다. 둘째, 패션 사진에 여성 연대, 여성 동성애의 표현이 나타나는 것이 확인되었다. 사진작가는 공간이나 소품을 활용하거나 모델의 신체 접촉, 실제 젠더 및 관계를 활용한 작업을 진행하였다. ‘두 입술’ 이론은 두 여성의 접촉으로 해석되기도 한다. 패션 사진 속 여성 표현은 '두 입술' 이론에서 나타나는 두 여성의 접촉, 즉 여성 애와 자매애로 해석될 수 있다. 본 연구는 패션 이미지의 표현 경향을 탐구하여 새로운 시각으로 패션 이미지 를 분석하고 의미를 해석하였다. 또한 예술과 미디어에서 재현되는 여성 이미지에 대한 논의점을 제시하고 다양한 표현의 여성 이미지를 고찰하였다는 데 의의가 있다.
