This study examines the experiences of teachers working in geographically isolated and difficult-to-access small schools, focusing on how they exercise agency in the context of small schools and how they build their professional identities. Many schools in South Korea are currently classified as small schools or are at risk of closure. Various government policies have been implemented to address this issue, but these policies are confined to top-down approaches and economic perspectives. This study focuses on the agency of on-site teachers, which is a key element in the sustainability of small schools in the USA. Specifically, this study explored alternative ways to help small schools sustain by analyzing the experiences and perceptions of on-site teachers. The researchers explored the operation of remote small schools located in an intermountain region in the United States from the perspective of four on-site teachers and drew implications for domestic small school policies.

본 연구는 지리적으로 소외되고 교통이 불편한 벽지 소규모 학교에서 근무하는 교사 들의 경험을 살펴보고, 그들이 소규모 학교 맥락에서 행위주체성을 어떻게 발휘하는지 에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 현재 국내 많은 학교들이 소규모 학교로 분류되거나 폐교의 위 험에 처해 있다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 다양한 정부 정책이 시행되고 있으나, 이는 하향식 접근과 경제적인 관점에 한정되고 있는 실정이다. 본 연구는 소규모 학교 지속 가능성의 핵심 요소인 현장교사의 행위 주체성에 주목한다. 즉, 현장 교사의 경험 과 인식을 분석하여 소규모 학교의 지속 가능성을 위한 대안을 모색하고자 한다. 이와 같은 목적을 위해 연구자들은 미국 사례를 통해 벽지 소규모 학교가 운영되어 가는 양 상을 내부자인 교사의 시각에서 분석하였다. 연구자들은 미국 산간 지역에 위치한 소 규모 학교 교사들의 경험과 시각을 분석하고 이를 통해 국내 소규모 학교 정책에 대한 시사점을 도출하고자 하였다.
