The purpose of this study is to examine the subjective consciousness of the work by examining the characterization of the classic novel . The research method for this advocates structuralism. Therefore, it reveals that the figures around Choi, Chi-won in the work are not drawn individually or accidentally, but are comprehensively and strategically composed, and aims to understand the value of the work a little deeper by examining its meaning. The content of this study is not to search for the main characters Choi, Chi-won, and his surrounding people (powerful people who do not fully recognize Chi-won’s abilities), which have been covered a lot in the past, but to the people around him (Choi, Chi-won who support and help him) who have not received much attention. Therefore, the first was to look at Choi, Chi-won’s mother and wife in turn. This is because they are the ones who protect the main characters Choi, Chi-won against their father and father-in-law, who do not fully recognize Choi, Chi-won’s abilities. The second examines the sacred beings (helpers) that help Choi, Chi-won in danger of dying when they went from Silla(新羅) to Tang(唐) and each time they returned from Tang(唐) to Silla(新羅). Those in power now know Choi, Chi-won’s abilities, but they are jealous, disparaging, and framing them, while heavenly beings beyond power protect and actively support Choi, Chi-won. The results of this study revealed that the theme consciousness of the work ‘Criticism of Medieval Thinking’ was further strengthened through active preparation of the characters around Choi, Chi-won. In addition, through this characterization, the artist argued that he was conscious of three effects. First, through these surrounding people, the artist can tell the story he wants to tell a little more actively, second, not only can he protect the author’s personal safety, but he can also protect the existential(實存) characters and those related to him. Third, it can be somewhat unconventional and unreasonable in the times, but it was possible to pursue a more mysterious and fictional romance(浪漫).

이 연구의 목적은 고전소설 <최고운전>의 인물 형상화를 살펴 작품의 주제 의식을 고찰하는 것이다. 이에 대한 연구 방법은 구조주의를 표방한다. 따라서 작품 내에서 최치원 주변 인물 형상화가 개별적, 우발적으로 그려진 것이 아니라 종합적, 전략적으로 구성된 것임 밝히고, 그 의미를 살펴 작품의 가치를 조금 더 깊게 이해하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이 연구의 내용은 기존에 많이 다뤄진 주인공 최치원과 그의 주변 인물(최치원의 능력을 온전히 인정하지 않는 권력자들-아버지, 중원 황제, 신라 왕, 중원과 신라의 조정 신하들)이 아니라, 다소 주목받지 못했던 주변 인물들(최치원을 지지하고 도와주는 조력자들)을 본격적으로 탐색하는 것이다. 따라서 첫 번째는 최치원의 어머니와 부인을 차례대로 살폈다. 그녀들은 최치원의 능력을 온전히 인정하지 않는 아버지와 (미래) 장인어른에 맞서서 주인공 최치원을 비호(庇護)하는 인물이기 때문이다. 두 번째는 최치원이 신라에서 중원으로 넘어갈 때와 이후 중원에서 신라로 돌아올 때 매번 죽을 위기에서 도움을 주는 신성한 존재들(조력자들)에 대해 살폈다. 현재 권력을 가지고 힘을 가진 자들도 최치원의 능력을 알지만 시기하고 폄하, 모함하는 데 비해, 권력을 뛰어넘는 천상의 존재들은 최치원을 보호하고 적극적으로 지지하고 있기 때문이다. 이 연구의 결과는 이처럼 최치원 주변 인물들의 적극적인 대비를 통해 ‘중세적 사고의 비판’이라는 작품의 주제 의식을 더 강화했음을 밝힌 것이다. 또한 이러한 인물 형상화를 통해 작가는 세 가지 효과를 의식했음을 논증하였다. 첫 번째는 이런 주변 인물을 통해 작가가 하고 싶은 이야기를 조금 더 적극적으로 할 수 있고, 두 번째는 작가의 신변 보호뿐만 아니라 실존 인물과 그와 관계된 인물을 보호할 수 있으며, 세 번째는 시대적으로 다소 파격적이고 무리일 수 있으나 그래서 오히려 더 신비하고 소설적인 낭만을 추구할 수 있었다는 것이다.
