This paper aims to introduce the thought of Robert M. Geraci, a professor in the Department of Religious Studies at Knox College in the United States, who is currently researching the future of artificial intelligence and robotics from a religious studies perspective, to the Korean theological and ecclesiastical communities. The paper presents Geraci’s thoughts based on participatory observations made during collaborative academic activities with the author, providing an understanding of his ideas that extends beyond what is available through previously published papers or books. Consequently, the paper addresses biographical aspects that are not covered in existing literature in Korea, thereby facilitating a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of his theories. Geraci’s thoughts can be summarized into three major points. First, Geraci has revealed that within the transhumanist visions and ideologies, which posit that humanity can achieve immortality through advancements in virtual spaces and machinery, there is an underlying Judeo-Christian apocalypticism. Second, Geraci identifies the dynamic practice of religion, which has not disappeared but rather transformed, within popular culture associated with scientific and technological advancements. In other words, rather than being discarded and fading away, religion is taking on new forms and vitality within the digital technology spaces inhabited by people. Finally, Geraci criticizes Western-centrism and advocates for an open approach to other regional cultures. Geraci’s scholarly perspective, which calls for an openness to other regional cultures and the development of AI technologies for the global community, provides a positive foundation for Korean theologians to engage in the ongoing discourse on artificial intelligence led by Western scholars. Geraci’s arguments suggest that Korean theological and ecclesiastical communities, may gain more persuasive and meaningful interpretations of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence technologies and domestic cultural phenomena through intellectual dialogue with him. Furthermore, this paper offers unique biographical information and key research achievements related to Geraci’s thoughts, providing Korean researchers with valuable resources for a deeper understanding and subsequent studies in relevant fields.

본 논문은 인공지능 및 로봇의 미래를 종교학적 관점에서 연구중인 미국 낙스 칼 리지의 종교학과 교수 로버트 제라시의 사상을 한국 신학계와 교계에 소개하는데 목 적이 있다. 본 논문은 저자와 제라시 교수가 공동학술활동을 하는 가운데 참여관찰적 으로 그를 이해한 내용을 바탕으로 그의 사상을 소개한다. 따라서, 본 논문은 기출판 된 논문이나 서적을 통해서는 알 수 없는 전기적 영역을 다룸으로써, 그의 사상을 보 다 깊이있고 총체적으로 이해할 수 있게 돕고 있다. 본 논문에서 설명한 제라시의 사 상은 크게 요약하면 세 가지로 나눌 수 있다. 첫째, 제라시는 과학기술의 발전을 통해 인류가 가상공간과 기계 속에서 영생할 수 있다고 믿는 트랜스휴머니스트들의 사상과 비전속에 유대-기독교적인 종말론이 내재되어 있음을 밝혔다. 이로써, 종교와 과학의 유기적 관계를 분석하는 학술적 공헌을 하였다. 둘째, 제라시는 과학기술과 연관된 대 중문화속에서 사멸되지 않고 변형된 종교의 역동적 실천을 발견하고 있다. 즉, 과학기 술의 등장으로 인해 종교는 대중에게 버림받고 힘없이 사라지는 것이 아니라 그들이 거주하는 디지털기술 공간에서 다른 형태로 생동하고 있는 것이다. 이러한 제라시의 주장은 과학, 종교, 기술이 문화 속에서 상호작용하고 있음을 말하고 있으며, 기술계보학과 같은 역사학적 접근방법과 민속지학 및 설문조사 같은 사회과학적 방법론을 통해 설득력을 확보하고 있다. 마지막으로, 제라시는 서구문화중심주의를 비판하며 타 지역문화에 열린 자세로 접근한다. 그는 전지구적 지역 공동체의 가치를 함께 모아 합의점을 모색하여 인공지능 과학기술 개발에 반영함으로써, 인공지능기술이 인류를 위한 과학이 되게 해야함을 주장한다. 타지역문화에 열려 있으며 전지구적 공동체를 위해 인공지능기술을 개발할 것을 주장하는 제라시의 학술적 관점은 서구 주도적으로 진행중인 인공지능 담론에 국내 신학자들의 참여 공간을 제공하는 긍정적 토대를 제 공할 수 있다. 본 논문이 소개하는 제라시의 사상은 오늘날 한국 신학계와 교계가 제 라시와의 지적 대화를 통하여 빠르게 발전하는 인공지능 과학기술과 국내의 문화현상 을 파악하고 분석할 때, 보다 설득력있고 의미있는 해석이 가능함을 시사한다. 또한, 본 논문은 국내 연구자들이 제라시의 사상을 보다 깊이 있게 이해하고 관련분야 후속 연구에 활용할 수 있는 국내외 유일의 전기적 정보와 주요 연구업적 자료를 제공하고 있다.
