Christianity around the world is divided into three main traditions. The first is the Eastern Orthodox tradition, which considers the liturgical traditions of the Near East and the Byzantine Empire from the 4th-6th centuries to be orthodox; the second is the Roman Catholic Church, which claims to be the universal church of the world and founded Christendom in Europe; and the third is the Protestant tradition, which arose in the 16th century as a reaction against the Roman Catholic Church and led to the Reformation, though there are some sub-traditions that have branched off from these three traditions, but in the realm of Christian theology, these are the three broad categories. These three traditions have coexisted, sometimes in opposition to each other, throughout Christian history, and have developed from each other to the present day. In particular, the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions were the two major traditions that bisected the Christian world until the Reformation in the 16th century. There is, however, also a tradition that takes important elements from both traditions and stands in the center of the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions. This is the Eastern Catholic tradition. This research examines the history and liturgy of the Eastern Catholic Church, which encompasses both Eastern and Western traditions. The conclusion of this study is that the Eastern Catholic Church is a church that embraces both orthodoxy and universality and claims the unity of both traditions. It is not surprising that there is little research on the Eastern Orthodox tradition in Korea, as it is not well known and the church does not exist. However, it is important to note that the Eastern Catholic Church has attempted to bridge the gap between the ancient churches that were divided into Christian traditions that share the Orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions, and can be considered the most important model of the ecumenical movement. This paper is organized as follows. Chapter 1 introduces the motivation, aims, and methodology of this study. Chapter 2 discusses the causes and processes of the schism between the Eastern and Western traditions and the birth of the Eastern Catholic tradition, which attempted to bridge the gap between the two. Chapter 3 examines how the newly emerging Eastern Catholic Church developed and where it stands today. Chapter 4 examines how the Roman Catholic Church stestes the Eastern Catholic tradition in its tradition. Chapter 5 concludes the research by discussing the current state of the Eastern Catholic Church, its prospects for the future, and suggests a path forward for the Eastern Catholic Church.

전 세계의 기독교는 크게 세 전통으로 구분된다. 첫째는 4-6세기 근동과 비잔틴 제국에서 형성된 예전 전통을 정통으로 여기는 동방 정교회 전통, 둘째는 전 세계의 보편 교회라 자처하며 유럽의 기독교 세계(Christendom)를 이룩한 로마 가톨릭교회 전통, 셋째는 16세기에 로마 가톨릭교회에 대항하고 종교개혁을 이루며 생겨난 개신 교회 전통이다. 물론 이 세 전통들에서 갈라져 나온 세부적인 전통들도 있지만 기독 교 신학의 영역에서는 큰 범주에서 세 개의 전통들로 분류한다. 이 세 전통들은 기독 교 역사 속에서 공존하기도 했고 때로는 반목하기도 하면서 서로 발전되어 현재에 이 르고 있다. 특히, 동방 정교회 전통과 로마 가톨릭 전통은 16세기에 종교개혁이 일어 나기 전까지는 기독교 세계를 양분했던 큰 전통들이기도 하다. 그런데 이 두 전통들 의 중요한 요소들을 받아들이고 동방 정교회와 로마 가톨릭 전통의 가운데에 서 있는 전통도 존재한다. 바로 동방 가톨릭(Eastern Catholic) 전통이다. 이 연구는 동방과 서 방의 전통을 아우르는 동방 가톨릭교회의 역사와 예전을 주제로 진행하였다. 이 연구 를 통해 도달한 결론은 동방 가톨릭교회는 정통성과 보편성, 이 두 가지를 다 포용하 면서 두 전통들의 연합을 주장하는 교회라 할 수 있다. 한국에서는 동방 정교회에 대한 소개조차 잘 되어 있지 않고 교회도 존재하지 않기에 동방 가톨릭 전통에 관한 연 구가 거의 없는 것은 당연한 일인지도 모른다. 그러나 주목해야 할 점은 이 동방 가 톨릭교회는 정교회 전통과 로마 가톨릭 전통을 공유하는 기독교 전통으로 분열된 고 대 교회의 간극을 연결해 보려는 시도를 해왔으며 현재에도 교회 일치 운동의 가장 중요한 모델로 여길 수 있다는 것이다. 본 연구는 다음과 같은 순서로 진행된다. 1장 은 본 연구의 동기와 연구 목표 및 방법론을 소개하며 2장에서는 동 서방 전통의 분 열 원인과 과정을 다루며 이 사이에서 두 전통을 지키려고 한 동방 가톨릭 전통의 탄 생을 다룬다. 3장에서는 새롭게 등장한 동방 가톨릭교회가 어떻게 발전되었고 현재 어떻게 자리 잡고 있는지에 대해 고찰하였다. 4장에서는 로마 가톨릭교회에서 동방 가톨릭 전통에 대해 어떤 평가를 하고 있는지를 다루었다. 5장은 본 연구의 결론으로 동방 가톨릭교회의 현재 상황과 미래에 대한 전망을 다루며 동방 가톨릭교회가 나아 가야 할 길을 제언하였다.
