This paper explores central themes in the environmental history of the Crusades by reviewing recent scholarship and re-analyzing primary sources. Focusing on the period from the 1090s to the mid-1180s, it addresses three topics: the ecological and environmental factors motivating the First Crusade; earthquakes in the Levant, which were the most notable and well-documented natural disasters during the Crusading era; and the consequences of urbanization in Levantine cities, particularly in Acre, which faced problems of overcrowding and various forms of pollution. Recent scholarship on the ecological causes of the People’s Crusade prompts us to question whether the expansion of European power during a period of climate warming, as traditionally interpreted, or short-term, sudden ecological crises admist a gradual climate cooling, drove the Crusades. In addition, research on earthquakes in the Levant could open up the possibility of combining the history of seismic activity with the history of emotions. Finally, the environmental history of the Crusades and the Levantine cities could include other man-made disasters, such as famine.

최근 환경사 연구의 약진과 더불어 서양 중세사 분야에서도 십자군 운동의 원인과 결과를 환경사 혹은 생태사의 관점에서 분석하고자 하는 연구들이 등장 하고 있다. 이 논문은 환경사적인 접근을 시도하는 최신 연구 성과들을 바탕으 로 일차사료들을 재분석하면서, 특히 1090년대부터 1180년대 중반까지 시기를 대상으로 십자군과 관련된 환경사 연구의 문제를 다음 세 가지 화두를 중심으 로 고찰하고 있다. 첫째는 십자군 운동의 생태환경적 원인, 둘째로는 십자군 시 기 레반트 지역의 자연재해 중 가장 중요하게 인식되며 다수의 기록이 남아 있 는 지진에 관한 기록, 그리고 마지막으로는 레반트의 십자군 도시 아크라에서 발생한 인구 과밀과 환경 오염 문제이다. 십자군의 환경사적 요인을 분석한 기존의 선행 연구는 십자군의 동인이 과연 전통적인 해석처럼 기후 온난화 시기에 나타난 유럽 세력의 팽창에 의한 것인 지, 아니면 서서히 기온이 냉각되고 있던 시기에 단기적으로 급작스럽게 찾아온 생태 위기에서 기인한 것인지 질문을 던지게 한다. 다음으로 레반트 지역의 지 진에 관한 일차사료 연구는 향후 지진사와 감정사의 결합 가능성을 제시해 준 다고 생각된다. 마지막으로 레반트 도시의 환경사와 재난사에 관해서는 환경 오 염 문제 외에 인간이 초래한 여러 다양한 재난 상황에 관한 연구로 확장해 나 갈 수 있을 것이다.
