This study aims to reveal the characteristics of idiomatic expressions used in webtoons. The characteristics of idiomatic expressions in webtoons can be classified into five categories. First dictionary-exclusion words are commonly used for idiomatic expressions. Second, an intermediate step exist between dictionary-inclusion and dictionary-exclusion idiomatic expressions. Third, dictionary-exclusion idiomatic expressions are used frequently in webtoons, although the meaning of dictionary-exclusion idiomatic expressions is not used in opaque sense to facilitate, understanding. Fourth, because censorship in webtoons is not stricter than that in other media, the use of profanity and buzzwords is unrestricted. Finally homophony is indicated in idiomatic expressions.

본 연구는 웹툰 언어 연구의 일환으로 웹툰에 사용되는 관용적 표현이 어떤 양상을 나타내며 소위 관용어가 가진 특징과 어떤 차이가 있는지 확인해 보는 연구이다. 웹툰에는 사전에 등재된 관용어도 있지만 관용 어 기준에 부합하지만 등재되지 않은 경우가 더 많아 등재된 관용어와 미등재된 표현을 아울러 관용적 표현이라고 재정의했다. 웹툰에서 사 용되는 관용적 표현은 전체 300개의 표현 중 등재 표현이 1/3 정도, 미 등재 표현이 2/3 정도를 차지하고 있었다. 웹툰의 관용적 표현의 특징 은 5가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫쨰, 미등재 관용적 표현의 사용이 압도 적으로 많다는 것이다. 둘째, 등재 관용적 표현과 미등재 관용적 표현 사이에 유사 미등재 관용적 표현이라는 중간 단계가 존재한다는 것이 다. 셋째, 웹툰에서 미등재 관용적 표현을 많이 사용하지만 독자가 쉽 게 이해할 수 있도록 미등재 관용적 의미를 불투명한 의미로 사용하고 있지는 않다는 것이다. 넷째, 검열이 다른 매체에 비해 엄격하지 않다 보니 비속어와 유행어의 사용이 자유롭다는 것이다. 마지막으로 하나 의 관용적 표현에 다른 의미(등재 및 용례 의미와 작가에 의한 새 의 미)를 가지는 동음이의현상이 발생하기도 한다.
