This study aims to examine the institutional critical art value of Hito Steyerl’s work, which shows an aspect of the late capitalist era using digital technology. In this study, we examine how various digital images of this era are consumed through Steyerl’s art project. In other words, it looks at Steyerl’s work based on the contradictions that appear in the structure and operational logic of modern society. Steyerl’s work generally focuses on the two-sided characteristics of digital technology. While proposing to critically look at the modern society represented by images and data, Steyerl also talks about how digital technology surrounding the entire life is used in the right direction today. 본 연구는 디지털 기술을 활용해 후기 자본주의 시대의 한 양상을 보여주는 히토 슈타이얼 작품의 제도비판적 예술 가치에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 슈타이얼의 미술 프로젝트를 통해 우리 시대 다양한 디지털 이미지들이 어떤 방식으로 소비되고 있는지 알아본다. 다시 말해 현대사회의 구조와 작동 논리에 나타나는 모순에 입각해 슈타이얼의 작업을 바라보는 것이다. 슈타이얼의 작품은 일반적으로 디지털 기술이 갖는 양면적인 특성에 주목한다. 슈타이얼은 이미지와 데이터로 표상되는 현대사회를 비판적으로 바라볼 것을 제안하면서도 오늘날 삶 전체를 둘러싼 디지털 기술이 올바른 방향으로 활용되는 방안에 대해서도 이야기한다. 이에 따라 본 논문에서는 슈타이얼 작품을 감시체계 와 정체성, 인공지능 및 알고리즘, 자본주의 시장과 연결 지어 사회적 제도에 비판적으로 접근하는 구체적인 사례들을 살펴보고자 한다.
