Suicidal imagery refers to vivid mental images related to suicide, categorized into two types: spontaneous imagery, which involves self-generated mental images related to suicidal behavior, and intrusive imagery, which is experienced regardless of intent. This study aimed to examine the role of suicidal imagery as a mediator in the relationship between experiential avoidance and suicide attempts. Specifically, we hypothesized that the subfactors of suicidal imagery, spontaneous and intrusive suicidal imagery would mediate this relationship. This study included 1675 community adults in Korea recruited through online platforms. Participants completed an online survey including measures of experiential avoidance, suicidal imagery, as well as suicidal thought and attempt history. The results indicated that suicidal imagery mediated the relationship between experiential avoidance and suicide attempts even after controlling for the severity of suicidal ideation. The parallel mediation model including the two subfactors, only spontaneous suicidal imagery mediated the relationship whereas intrusive suicidal imagery did not. These results suggested the differential mechanisms of spontaneous and intrusive suicidal imagery underlying the relationship between experiential avoidance and suicide attempts and underscored the importance of evaluating and addressing suicidal imagery as part of interventions aimed at reducing suicide attempt.

자살 심상은 자살 행동과 관련한 정신적 이미지로 스스로 떠올리는 자발적 자살 심상과 의도 와 상관없이 경험되는 침습적 자살 심상으로 구분된다. 본 연구는 자살 심상이 경험 회피와 자살 시도의 관계를 매개하는 역할을 하는지 알아보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 구체적으로 자 발적 자살 심상과 침습적 자살 심상이 경험 회피와 자살 시도의 관계를 매개할 것이라고 가 정하였다. 지역사회 성인 1,675명이 본 연구에 참여하였고, 경험 회피, 자살 심상, 그리고 평 생 자살 시도력 및 자살 생각 심각도를 측정하는 온라인 설문 문항에 응답하였다. 연구 결과, 자살 생각 심각도 수준을 통제한 이후에도 경험 회피와 자살 시도의 관계를 자살 심상이 매 개하였다. 자살 심상의 하위 요인이 포함된 병렬 매개 모형 검증 결과 자발적 자살 심상만 이 경험 회피와 자살 시도의 관계를 매개하였고 침습적 자살 심상은 이 관계를 매개하지 않 았다. 본 연구는 경험 회피와 자살 시도의 관계에서 자발적, 침습적 자살 심상의 차별적인 역할을 보여주며 자살 시도의 감소를 목표로 하는 자살 심상의 평가와 개입의 필요성을 시사한다.
