[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to shed light on the achievements of sports journalist Lee Tae-young and to keep his memory as a record. [Method] Various literature data related to Lee Tae-young were analyzed, and the details of major events were analyzed and described using oral historical research methods through interviews with Lee Tae-young and officials. [Result] First, Lee had a rich childhood, born as the son of Lee Gil-yong, an intellectual and pioneer of the time, but suffered a lot when his father was abducted to North Korea and disappeared after the outbreak of the Korean War. Second, Lee chose to become a journalist to continue his father's legacy, risking his life to participate in the coverage of Korea's first climb to Mount Everest, and by contributing to the successful hosting of the Seoul Olympics by establishing the Korea Sports Journalists Federation and joining the World Sports Journalists Federation. [Conclusion] Lee's footsteps as a sports journalist were the result of Lee's constant reflection and efforts to take over his father's confidence and determination and commit himself with a sense of duty as a sports journalist.

[목적] 본 연구는 스포츠 기자 이태영의 업적을 조명하고 그의 기억을 기록으로 남겨 두고자 하는 목적으로 진행되 었다. [방법] 이태영과 관련된 각종 문헌자료를 분석하였으며, 주요 사건에 대한 구체적인 내용은 이태영 및 관계자 와의 면담을 통해 구술사적 연구 방법을 활용하여 분석 및 기술하였다. [결과] 첫째, 이태영은 당대의 지식인이자 선 구자였던 이길용의 아들로 태어난 유복한 유년 시절을 보냈으나, 한국전쟁 발발 이후 부친이 북한에 납북되어 실종 되면서 많은 어려움을 겪었다. 둘째. 이태영은 부친의 유업(遺業)을 이어가기 위해 기자의 길을 선택하였고, 목숨을 걸고 대한민국 최초의 에베레스트 등정 동행 취재에 참여하였으며 한국체육기자연맹 창설하고 세계체육기자연맹에 가입함으로써 서울올림픽의 성공적인 개최에 기여하는 등 대(代)를 이은 기자로서의 사명감을 실천하였다. [결론] 스 포츠 기자로서 이태영의 이러한 발자취는 결국 부친의 당당함과 단호함을 이어받아 스포츠 기자로서 부끄러움 없이 사명감을 가지고 헌신하겠다는 이태영 스스로의 끊임없는 성찰과 노력의 결과물이었다.
