This paper examines the transformation of postwar Japanese detective fiction through Sakaguchi Ango’s The Discontinuous Murder Case. In the aftermath of World War II, Japanese society’s shift towards “cultural nation–building” and “new literature” prompted a redefinition of detective fiction. Sakaguchi Ango’s work reflects the moral confusion of the time, moving away from sensationalism towards more logical and intricately plotted detective stories. The Discontinuous Murder Case is a key example, using immorality as a central device to both critique and reflect postwar instability while introducing new literary approaches to the genre. The paper compares Sakaguchi’s detective fiction theories with those of Edogawa Ranpo and analyzes the structure, tricks, and literary qualities of The Discontinuous Murder Case. Contemporary critiques, including those from the Detective Writers Club Award, highlight Sakaguchi’s contributions as an outsider to the genre. Ultimately, this study identifies the work as a milestone that expanded the possibilities of postwar Japanese detective fiction, blending literary depth with social critique and demonstrating how the genre adapted to the era’s democratic ideals.
