One of the key concepts discussed in explaining Natsuo Kirino’s literary world has been “disparity”, with previous research focusing on the formation of this disparity and the issues of labor experienced by characters as they are pushed down from the middle class. However, this paper examines how Kirino portrays multiple layers within the same social class. In Out and Metabola, the author depicts the situations faced by the characters as “trapped spaces” that cannot be resolved solely by their own will, and she uniquely maintains a third-person perspective through omniscient narration, illustrating the choices made by the characters in response to their situations. Furthermore, in Out and Metabola, Kirino highlights both characters who make the right decisions by choosing favorable outcomes and those who fail. This aspect suggests that while the disparities in Japanese society are indeed structurally created, as pointed out by previous studies, there is also an element that seems to stem from the characters’ choices. This creates a contradiction with the detailed and realistic depiction of exploitation in the novels that critiques social structures, leading to a sense of confusion for the reader. It is precisely at this point that Kirino not only realistically portrays the underlying aspects of a stratified society but also reproduces the social evaluations of these individuals through her novels.

그동안 기리노 나쓰오의 소설세계를 설명하는 키워드 가운데 하나로 ‘격차’가 논의되며 선행연구에서는 그 격차의 형성과 등장인물들이 중산층에서 그 아래로 밀려나는 과정에서 경험하는 노동의 문제에 초점이 맞춰졌지만 본 논문은 기리노는 같은 계층 안에서도 여러 층위를 그려내고 있다는 점을 고찰하였다. 『아웃』과 『메타볼라』를 통해 작가는 등장인물이 처한 상황을 본인의 의지만으 로는 해결할 수 없는 ‘갇힌 공간’으로 연출하고, 이에 대응하는 캐릭터들의 선택을 그려내는데 그 과정에서 전지적 작가 시점을 선택하여 제3자의 입장을 유지하는 서술은 독특하다고 할 수 있다. 그리고 작가는 『아웃』과 『메타볼라』에서 자신에게 유리한 판단을 내려 바른 선택을 하는 인물과, 실패하는 인물 모두를 조명하는데, 이 부분은 선행연구의 지적처럼 일본 사회에 존재하는 격차가 분명 구조적으로 만들어지는 측면도 있지만 반대로 등장인물의 선택의 문제로 보여지는 부분이 있다. 이는 소설 속에서 구체적이고 사실적인 착취의 묘사를 통해 사회 구조의 문제 를 지적한 것과는 상충되어 독자로 하여금 혼란을 일으키게 만드는데, 바로 이 지점에서 기리노는 격차사회를 구성하는 저변의 모습을 사실적으로 보여줌과 동 시에, 이들에 대한 사회적 평가까지도 소설을 통해 재현한다고 볼 수 있다.
