The article examines the academic achievements of two great American geopoliticians in the twentieth century, Nicholas Spykman and Zbigniew Brzezinski. The former suggested how to secure the United States against the second world war and the theory of Rimland in place of Mackinder’s heartland framework, while the latter provided how to look at Soviet society through the prism of totalitarianism during the Cold War era and a strategy for the stable establishment of American world system after the breakup of the Soviet Union. Thus Spykman’s suggestions became the foundation of postwar American foreign policy, so-called the strategy of containment, and Brzezinski’s analysis and conclusion a rationale of the American strong stance against the Soviet Union as well as the groundwork of the US-leading international order after her dissolution. In addition, they all rejected isolationism which was an old tradition in American society since its foundation, and made a great contribution to the maintenance and consolidation of American leadership with their own original and ingenious scholastic results.
