This paper examines the formation process and characteristics of Gaya in the Changwon region. In the Bronze Age, the examination of archaeological sites such as dolmens and moats reveals two core areas in the Changwon basin. Analyzing the density of dolmens and the concentration of archaeological sites indicates the dominance of the eastern side. The later period of the Bronze Age in the Changwon region witnessed the transition of moats from a ritual center to a political hub. This foundational framework of the Bronze Age seamlessly continued into the formation of Golpoguk(骨浦國).The central Euprak(邑落) of Golpoguk can be identified, like the late Bronze Age, towards the east of the Changwon basin, characterized by a high density of archaeological sites. The growth foundation of Golpoguk includes discussions on iron production and distribution, as well as maritime trade with China and Japan.During the late 3rd and early 4th centuries, due to the Posang Palguk War(浦上八國戰爭), Golpoguk suffered defeat, leading to damages in the existing central area of Gaeumjeong-dong. Consequently, new central powers emerged in the west during this transitional period from Golpoguk(骨浦國) to Taksunguk(卓淳國).

○ 본고는 창원분지 내 가야의 성장과정, 특히 가야 전기의 골포국을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 청동기시대에 지석묘와 환호 등의 유적을 보면 창원분지에는 2개의 핵심취락(환호취락)이 확인된다. 지석묘의 밀집도나 유적의 집중도로 보면 동부쪽이 더 우세하다. 창원지역 청동기시대 후기의 환호는 의례의 중심이라는 점에서, 이 시기는 정치적 중심지로 전환되는 과도기이자 읍락형성기이기도 하다. 이러한 청동기시대의 기본 틀은 골포국의 형성에도 그대로 이어진다.골포국의 중심 읍락(국읍)은 청동기시대(후기)를 뒤이어 유적의 밀집도가 높은 가음정동-외동 일대의 창원분지 동쪽으로 파악할 수 있다. 골포국의 성장기반에 대해서는 철의 생산과 유통, 그리고 중국·일본과의 해상교역 등을 거론할 수 있다. 3세기말·4세기초 무렵의 포상팔국전쟁에서 골포국이 패하면서 기존 국읍인 가음정동·외동 일대가 피해를 보면서 서쪽의 읍락 세력이 새로운 중심으로 등장한 것으로 보인다. 이 무렵이 골포국에서 탁순국으로의 전환기라고 하겠다. 4∼5세기대에 창원의 중심고분군이 창원분지 서쪽에 위치한 도계동고분군임에서도 뒷받침된다. 창원지역은 가야 전기부터 유력 세력인 구야국과 안야국이 인접하고 있어 그 틈바구니에서 성장에 제한된 면도 적지 않다. 특히, 창원분지의 가야 세력은 3세기말 혹은 4세기초 무렵의 포상팔국전쟁 패배로 4세기대에는 금관가야의 영향하에 들어가고, 400년 고구려 남정이후에는 신라·아라가야의 틈바구니에서 성장이 제한되었다.
