Mukdam-Sungwoo was a person who practiced Bodhi-sattva's actions in all fields in modern Korean Buddhism. He excelled in three aspects of Buddhism, Sila(戒), Samadhi(定) and Prajna(慧), without losing the task of the Buddha through the dizzying times facing the state and Buddhism. He set an example in understanding, practice and edification as a benevolent zen-practice. In this thesis, three of Mukdam-Sungwoo's various roles are considered. First, I examined the method, principle, practice and effect of sitting through Mukdam-Sungwoo's Zuochanyi(坐禪儀). Zuochanyi is a guide made for those who first started Buddhism, which is a guide for beginners. Second, I examined modern Korean Buddhism has shown important guidelines for the genealogy of enlightenment as a subject to be noticed. This is related to establishing the identity of Korean Buddhism. Third, I examined that the teaching of mind plays a big role among the teachings shown by Mukdam-Sungwoo. The practice and enlightenment emphasized by Mukdam-Sungwoo was to support goodness in daily life, to abandon evil, and to keep everyone's mind clean. In conclusion, Mukdam-Sungwoo's zen-practice was to practice Zen in daily life by disseminating Zuochanyi. And also to understand Buddhism based on Sila and Samadhi and Prajna. What's more, Mukdam-Sungwoo started teaching from the study of the scriptures and proceeded to the Zen. After all, Mukdam-Sungwoo emphasized the genealogy of enlightenment in Zen-order.

묵담성우(黙潭聲祐)는 출가자의 본분사를 지키며 계와 정과 혜의 무루삼학(無漏三學)에 해박하고 철저하며 자비로운 선자(禪者)로 이해와 실천과 교화의 모습을 구현해주었다. 본고에서는 묵담성우의 면모를 세 가지 측면으로 고찰한다. 첫째, 선법의 보급을 위해 좌선의(坐禪儀)를 보여서 좌선법의 원리와 실제 및 그 효용을 보여준다. 이것은 좌선의 초보자를 위한 안내서에 해당한다. 둘째는 한국불교의 종단에서 시대적인 자각으로서 전등계보에 대한 이해 및 정통법맥의 상승을 통한 종단의 정체성의 구현에 노력한다. 셋째, 선법문의 특징은 자성법문을 구현해주고 있다. 묵담성우의 수행과 깨달음은 일상의 평범함 가운데 있으면서 선(善)을 받들고 악(惡)을 버리며, 자정기의(自淨其意)로서 선용기심(善用其心)이고, 단용차심(但用此心)이며, 이생기심(而生其心)이 성취되는 불법의 특징을 보여준다. 선풍의 구조는 좌선의의 보급 및 무루삼학에 근거한 이해, 종교입선에 근거한 자성법문의 강조, 전등계보에 의거한 자파의 수호와 종단의 정체성 구현이다. 묵담선풍은 경전의 가르침에 대한 이해에 근거하여 교학과 계학에 대한 실천을 담보하여 심지계(心地戒)의 율맥을 전승시켰고, 선경 및 선어록에 근거한 정법안장의 계승과 구현이 엿보인다.
