This study focuses on Maegok(梅谷) Oh Yun-hwan(吳潤煥, 1872- 1946), a writer-scholar from Sokcho(Yangyang) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and examines the creation and meaning of various biography works he wrote for his ancestors. The Haeju Oh family(海州吳氏) has lived in the Sokcho-Yangyang area in Gangwon-do since the time of Oh Eung-gil(吳應吉) and his son Oh Jun(吳遵), and it has had a significant impact on society for generations. As Oh Yun-hwan grew up in such a historic family, he had a high level of interest and pride. However, since there was no material that summarized the history of the Haeju Oh family until his time, Oh Yun-hwan attempted to clearly reveal the history of the family through the creation of his specific works. Oh Yun-hwan's work to exalt his ancestors can be discussed in two aspects. The first is the writings of haengjang(行狀). Oh Yun-hwan wrote haengjangs for a total of 8 people of 5 generations. These works are mainly about the extraordinary behavior and traces of his ancestors, and they contain Oh Yun-hwan's deep feelings of respect and admiration for them. The second is to write Myogalmyeong(墓碣銘). Oh Yun-hwan composed epitaphs for seven people, including Oh Eung-gil, Sokcho- Yangyang's first inhabitant, and also requested epitaphs from influential writers of the time. In this way, Oh Yun-hwan systematically organized his family history, which had not been properly revealed until that time. These works to commemorate his ancestors, carried out intensively in the latter part of his life, clearly shows the strong family consciousness he had toward his ancestors. And such consciousness served as a solid foundation for him to carry out a wider range of activities in a more meaningful position in rural society.

본고는 19세기 말~20세기 초 속초(양양) 출신의 문인-학자 매곡(梅谷) 오윤 환(吳潤煥, 1872~1946)을 대상으로, 그가 자신의 선조들을 위해 지은 여러 전기류 작품의 창작 양상과 그 의미에 대해 살핀 글이다. 해주 오씨(海州吳氏)는 선조(宣祖) 때 사복시 정(司僕寺正)을 지낸 오응길(吳 應吉)과 그 아들 오준(吳遵) 때부터 강원도 속초-양양 일대에 세거하여, 이곳 지역 사회에 대대로 적지 않은 영향을 미쳤다. 오윤환은 그러한 유서 깊은 가문에서 성장한 인사인 만큼, 그에 대한 높은 관심과 자부심을 지니고 있었다. 그러나 당대까지만 하더라도 이와 같은 해주 오씨 가문의 내력을 제대로 정리해 놓은 자료가 존재하지 않았기에, 오윤환은 구체적인 작품 창작을 통해 집안의 역사를 분명히 밝히고자 하였다. 오윤환의 선대 현양 작업은 두 방면으로 대별하여 논할 수 있다. 첫 번째는 행장 저술이다. 오윤환은 6대조 오갑희부터 자신의 부모에 이르기까지 총 5대 8인에 대한 행장을 찬술하였다. 이들 작품은 선조들이 보인 남다른 행실과 자취에 대한 내용이 주를 이루고 있으며, 여기에는 그들에 대한 오윤환의 깊은 존모(尊慕)의 감정이 배어 있다. 두 번째는 묘갈명 작성이다. 오윤환은 양양의 입향조 오응길 이하 7인에 대한 묘갈명을 지어 남겼으며, 당대의 유력 문인들에 게 묘갈명을 부탁하여 받아두기도 하였다. 이러한 방식으로 오윤환은 그간 제대로 밝혀지지 못하였던 자신의 가문 내력 을 체계적으로 정리해 내었다. 생애 후반 집중적으로 행해진 이와 같은 일련의 선대 현양 작업은, 그가 평생에 걸쳐 가지고 있던 공고한 가문 의식의 면모를 잘 보여준다. 그리고 그러한 의식은 그로 하여금 향촌 사회에서 보다 의미 있는 위치에서, 보다 폭넓은 활동을 수행할 수 있도록 하는 공고한 바탕이 되어 주었다.
