Recently, the rapidly increasing number of lonely deaths in Korea has emerged as a serious social problem. Approximately 1% of all deaths each year are found to be lonely deaths. The purpose of this study is to understand the living experiences of people at risk of lonely deaths by life cycle, focusing on urban and rural areas. To achieve this goal, the data were collected with seven young, middle-aged, and elderly people at risk of lonely deaths and analyzed using a qualitative case study approach. The analysis revealed that the living experiences of those at risk of lonely deaths by life cycle were organized into four categories(reasons for living alone in the area, difficulties in everyday life, effort for daily life, suggestions for preventing social isolation) and 23 subcategories. Based on the major results, policy and practical recommendations were made to prevent social isolation and improve the quality of life of those at risk of lonely deaths. The proposal was presented in terms of five needs of people at high risk of lonely death: employment, social relationships, care, physical and mental health, housing, and safety.

최근 우리나라에서는 급증하는 고독사가 심각한 사회문제로 대두되고 있다. 매년 전체 사망자 중 약 1% 내외는 고독사 사망자인 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 목적은 중소도시 및 농촌 지역을 중심으로 생애주기별 고독사 위험군의 생활경험을 이해하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위해 청년, 중장년, 노년층 고독 사 고위험군 7명을 대상으로 심층면접을 실행하여 질적 사례연구 접근으로 분석하였다. 분석결과, 생애 주기별 고독사 고위험군의 생활경험은 4개의 범주(지역에서 혼자 사는 이유, 일상생활의 어려움, 일상을 위한 노력, 사회적 고립 예방을 위한 제안)와 23개의 하위범주로 구성되었다. 이러한 연구결과에 근거하 여 고독사 고위험군의 사회적 고립 예방 및 삶의 질 향상을 위한 방안을 정책적·실천적으로 제언하였다. 제언은 고독사 고위험군의 일자리, 사회적 관계, 돌봄, 신체‧정신건강, 주거 및 안전 5가지 욕구 측면에서 제시하였다.
