This paper analyzes the novel Four Days, which is based on the No Gun Ri incident, to explore the content and significance highlighted through the transformation of the incident. The narrative depicts the enduring sense of place of the No Gun Ri twin tunnels and its expansion across various spatial forms. These spatial changes involve a transition from involuntary closure to voluntary disconnection and disregard. The novel shifts focus from an accurate understanding or testimony of the No Gun Ri incident to the subsequent events, namely the ongoing repetition, variation, and transformation of the incident. The contemporary variation of the No Gun Ri incident arises from the tension and juxtaposition between public discourse and grand narratives versus private discourse and micro-narratives, with the former overwhelmingly prevailing. This leads to the emergence of non-existence, marked by the absence of the victims of the No Gun Ri incident and the ignorance and denial of the survivors’ deaths by subsequent generations. Despite this, non-existence is persistently brought to attention through unreliable characters and media. The novel plays a crucial role in reconstructing collective memory concerning the No Gun Ri incident. It does this by reintegrating the concept of non-existence—elements that were excluded and erased from memory due to national strategies of remembrance—thereby aiding in the reshaping of a well-established collective identity.

이 글은 노근리 사건을 제재로 삼은 장편소설 『나흘』을 텍스트로 삼아, 이 소설이 주목 하는 사건성의 내용과 의미를 밝히고자 했다. 우선 소설은, 노근리 쌍굴에 각인된 완고한 장소성이 현재까지 지속되고 있을 뿐만 아니라 다양한 유형의 공간을 통해 확장되고 있다 고 묘사한다. 이 공간적 변화는 비자발적 폐쇄→자발적 단절과 외면이라는 성격적 변화를 내장하고 있다. 이를 통해 소설은, 노근리 사건에 대한 정확한 이해·증언보다는 사건 이후의 사건들 즉 노근리 사건의 반복적 지속과 변주 그리고 변화에 집중한다. 노근리 사건 의 현재적 변주는 공적 담론·거대서사↔사적 담론·미시서사의 대립·병치 그리고 전자 의 압도적 우위에서 비롯된다. 이로 인한 결과는 노근리 사건 희생자의 부재, 생존자의 죽음에 대한 후대의 무지와 부인 즉 비존재의 탄생이다. 하지만 신뢰할 수 없는 인물과 매체를 통해 비존재는 끊임없이 환기된다. 비존재는 처음엔 결여나 부정의 기호로 인지되 지만, 이들은 외면·침묵의 맹세를 한 집단에 대한 문제제기나 물음에 상응한다. 비존재를 가시화하고 비존재 발생 원인을 규명하기 위해, 소설은 현재의 국가 이데올로기와 무관한 로컬 층위의 사건이 아니라 로컬과 국가의 관계라는 층위에서 노근리 사건과 그 이후의 사건들을 해석한다. 그리고 국가 층위의 기억에서 배제되고 망각된 비존재를 존재로 편입함으로써 노근리 사건에 대한 집단기억의 집을 새롭게 짓는데 즉 고착된 집단 정체성을 재구성하는데 기여한다.
