The transformative possibilities of the futures were exhibited through the miniatures and their movements in postwar Japan, around the time of Osaka Expo ‘70. In 1969, Komatsu Sakyō, a renowned Japanese Sci-Fi writer, published City in the Air 008 (j. Kūchū toshi 008), a serialized science fiction for children and adolescents, which showcased Komatsu’s imaginative exploration of futures, rooted in events that occurred in Japan and across the world in the late 1960s, tying technological advancements and architectural designs for future cities. Shortly thereafter, this work was adapted into an animated version using marionettes, which was then aired on NHK from 1969 to 1970, just before Expo ‘70. This essay will look into the ways that the miniatures, animated world of City in the Air 008, revealed certain ambivalent feelings about unknown futures, interestingly echoing Komatsu’s thoughts on models (j. mokei) as a historically significant concept, and embodying both positive and apocalyptic elements in the futuristic, technological environment of the late 1960s.

오사카 엑스포 ‘70을 앞둔 1960년대 후반 일본에서 미래상은 다양한 영역 에서 폭발적으로 상상되고 전시되었다. 본 연구는 1969년 출간된 코마츠 사 쿄의 과학소설 『공중 도시 008』의 모형과 미니어처의 묘사를 통해 이러한 미래상을 탐구하고자 한다. 어린이와 청소년을 위해 발표된 이 작품은 1960년 대 일본을 비롯하여 전 세계에서 일어난 사건들을 바탕으로 기술 발전과 미 래 도시의 새로움을 풍부하게 그려내었고, 출간 직후 인형극 애니메이션으로 재탄생하였다. 엑스포 ‘70 개최 직전인 1969년부터 1970년까지 일본 공영방송 NHK에서 방영된 애니메이션 공중 도시 008은, 작은 크기의 인형들과 미래 도시의 미니어처를 텔레비전 모니터 속에 등장시키고 이를 움직이는 이미지 세계로 구현하였다. 애니메이션 속 입체적인 미니어처의 묘사와 역동적인 움 직임은 기술환경 변화에 따른 대한 불확실한 미래사회에 대한 양가적 감정, 즉 기대감과 공포를 구체적으로 전시한 것이었다. 흥미롭게도 코마츠 사쿄는 모형(模型)을 역사적으로 중요한 사물/개념 인식하며 미래를 상상하는 매개로 탐구하기도 하였는데, 이러한 모형에 대한 주목과 생생한 표현들은 당시 일 본 사회의 미래에 대한 시각 및 촉각적 상상력과 연결되어 있다.
