Technologically-focused forensic science aims to discover and analyze evidence, but the essence of forensic science is closer to understanding how the meaning of evidence can be interpreted and how it should be used. Particularly, the 'meaning' of evidence can be interpreted differently depending on the context of the incident, and the ability to interpret evidence is crucial as it can determine whether a crime is proven. From this perspective, this paper sought to explore how CSIs, as subjects of interpretation, play a role in the field and what competencies they need to possess. The paper collected experiences through in-depth interviews with 10 CSIs. Although the scope of 'interpretation' defined by each participant varied, they were aware of themselves as subjects of interpretation. Through their responses, key competencies necessary for forensic scientist were identified. Based on this, a model of the ideal forensic scientist was derived, and efforts to nurture such talent were examined.

기술을 중점으로 하는 과학수사는 증거를 발견하고 분석하는 데에 목적이 있지만 본질적인 법과학은 증거의 의미를 어떻게 해석할 수 있는지, 또 어떻게 사용해야 하는 지에 가까워진다. 특히 ‘의미’는 사건의 맥락에 따라 다르게 해석되고 범죄를 입증하는 여부가 달라져 증거를 해석하는 능력이 중요하게여겨진다. 이러한측면에서 현장을 감 식하는 과학수사관이 해석의 주체로서 어떻게 역할하고 있는지 알아보고 그들이 갖추 어야 할 역량을 탐구하고자 하였다. 본 논문은 현직 과학수사관 10명을 심층 면담하여 증거의 의미를 해석한 경험을 수 집하였다. 참여자마다 정의하는 ‘해석’의 범주는 달랐지만 스스로 해석의 주체임을 인 지하고 있었으며, 답변을 통해 법과학 전문가에게 필요한 주요 역량을 추출할 수 있었 다. 이를 토대로 법과학 전문가의 인재상 모형을 도출하고 인재를 양성하기 위한 노력 에 대해 고찰하였다.
