Religion is intrinsically linked to the forms of life, making it practically impossible to separate religion from life itself. Moreover, true education is synonymous with true religion, possessing a remarkable power to transform character. By presenting a Christianity adapted to the local context, and locals in turn adapting and creating their own form of Christianity, true religious and educational identification can be achieved. This study focuses on the significant efforts and dedication to religious and educational identification by early missionaries to Korea, specifically Horace G. Underwood and Samuel A. Moffett. Particularly, this study examines the efforts and characteristics of Underwood and Moffett's religious and educational identification around the late 19th century, focusing on discussions held at the Edinburgh Missionary Conference in 1910 in Scotland. This study attempts a missiological evaluation of these efforts, highlighting the interplay of religious mission and educational endeavors in shaping both the missionaries' approaches and the indigenous Christian community's development.

종교는 삶의 형태와 밀접하게 관련되기 때문에 종교와 삶을 분리한다 는 것은 사실상 불가능하다. 또한 진정한 교육은 진정한 종교이며, 교육은 인성을 변화시키는 놀라운 힘이다. 선교사가 현지인에게 적합한 기독교를 전하고, 현지인들은 선교사들이 전해준 기독교에 적응하며 자신만의 적합 한 기독교를 만들어가는 것으로 진정한 종교·교육적 동일화가 이루어질 수 있다. 본 연구는 초기 내한 선교사들이 종교·교육적 동일화에 적지 않은 노 력과 헌신을 기울인 것을 주목하며, 그 가운데 호러스 언더우드(Horace G. Underwood)와 사무엘 마펫(Samuel A. Moffett)을 중심으로 이를 살펴보 는 연구를 시도한다. 특별히 언더우드와 마펫이 내한한 19세기 말, 영국 스코틀랜드에서 1910년에 열린 에딘버러(Edinburgh) 선교사대회에서 논 의된 내용들을 중심으로 초기 내한 선교사 언더우드와 마펫의 종교적, 교 육적 동일화의 노력과 특징에 관하여 선교편지, 선교보고서, 저서, 기고 글 등을 중심으로 살펴보고 이에 대한 선교신학적 평가를 시도한다.
