This paper examines current status of World Music and Culture courses operated in undergraduate program of traditional music (Gugak) department in Korean universities, and looked at the ideas of students who have learnt and are willing to learn foreign music as a Gugak musician. By exploring the attendee’s demands and their provision about contemporary college education, this research discusses how Korean traditional music and world music education are interrelated and congenial. World music coursework is provided in the form of theory oriented under the title of Asian Music (Jeonbuk Univ.), World Music and Dance (Yeongnam, Chungang Univ.), Anthropology of Music (Seoul National Univ.), World Musical Instrument Theory (Hanyang Univ.), Introduction to Buddhist Music (Dongguk Univ.). On the other hand, performance centered course for Buddhist music (Dongguk Univ.), World Percussion/Global Rhythm(Chungang, Chugye Univ. of Fine Arts, Seoul Institute of the Arts), Inter-cultural MusicㆍEast West Converged Ensemble (Chugye Univ.) is also set. Recently, overseas student exchange program began to closely involve traditional music courses in. However, neither of following renowned university, including Jeonnam, Ehwa Woman’s, Busan, and Gyeongbuk university and Korea National Univ. of Arts, open any world music course in undergraduate program. On the contrary, performance course combining foreign music increases in art specialized colleges. Most of the class attendee recognize world music and culture useful and accept its positive influence for the future musical works. Moreover, many students request expansion and diversification of the course especially in the way of collaboration with artists in many different fields, so to experience a process of producing “somewhat new” music. The direction toward a creative outcome is the intersection in which the students’ demand and the university’s goal of cultivating global artist and unique Korean traditional music accommodating world’s various types of musical source. In order to systematize and embody an appropriate world music education suitable for college Gugak students, the World Music and Culture course should not be separately opened but be tightly interwoven with already established Gugak program. Systematized and sequential course not only likely fulfills the needs of future Gugak musicians but also be able to handle the critical situation the college education has now faced in Korea.

본 연구는 대학 국악과의 세계음악문화 수업 개설 현황과 학생들의 인식과 요구 조사를 통해 국 악교육과 세계음악문화 학습의 개연성을 살폈다. 현재 이론 수업은 전반적으로 축소되고 실기수업 은 확대 추세다. 동양음악개론(전북대), 세계음악과 춤(영남대), 음악인류학(서울대), 세계악기론 (한양대), 불교음악개론ㆍ실습(동국대), 월드퍼커션(중앙대), 글로벌타악ㆍ동서융합실내악(추계 예대), 인터컬츄럴 뮤직(서울예대)이 개설된다. 학생들은 세계음악문화 학습을 통해 자국 음악 숙고의 기회, 미래 예술가로의 영역 확대 준비의 시간을 갖고, 국악과 연계한 새로운 도전, 융합 연주 및 창작을 기대한다. 음악 자산 축적을 위해 경 험 중심 교육을 요구하며 여러 분야 전문가와 교류 협업을 통해 궁극적으로 새로운 국악 결과물의 생산을 계획한다. 세계음악문화 교과의 실질적 교육 효율성 제고를 위해서 국악 교과와 병합, 병행하여 긴밀성을 높여야 한다. 세계음악 이론, 실습, 앙상블, 월드뮤직 작곡으로 교육 목표를 연계하고, 발표회로 마 무리해 학생들의 자주적 표현과 융합 공연에 대한 요구를 충족해야 한다. 실재적 역할이 가능한 교과 운영은 미래 국악인 양성, 국악 발전적 계승, 대학교육위기 대처의 한 방편이 될 것이다.
