The climate crisis and the violent aspects it has brought about have necessitated the concept of ecoviolence. It has become difficult to explain the complex and difficult phenomenon of violence caused by the ecological crisis using only the existing concepts of pollution and environmental destruction. The discussion of ecoviolence has moved away from the initial position of emphasizing conflicts related to resources and has gradually progressed to a concept in which the conflict has been weakened and the damage to nature is further highlighted. Ecoviolence is generally defined as ‘agential and structural violence that affects both nature and people, and may or may not take place during conflict.’ The current meaning of ecoviolence has expanded and deepened to a threat to environmental justice and human security, and further to a violation of nature’s inherent rights. This kind of ecological violence has agentic or structural characteristics, but above all, it is characterized as violence that has both of these characteristics simultaneously. It is also argued that it encompasses natural, social, and psychological dimensions and has cyclical characteristics of damage and abuse. The concept of ecological violence deepens awareness of violence by paying attention to invisible violence such as deprivation of relationships, and is also significant in that it shows that violence operates in the complex interrelationship between humans and the environment surrounding humans.

기후위기 및 이러한 위기가 초래한 폭력적 양상들은 생태폭력이라는 개념을 필요로 하게 되 었다. 공해, 환경파괴라는 기존의 개념만으로는 생태위기로 인해 발생한 폭력의 복잡하고 난 해한 현상을 설명하기 어렵게 된 것이다. 생태폭력 논의는 자원과 관련된 갈등을 강조하던 초 기의 입장에서 벗어나 점차 분쟁 부분이 약화되었고 더 나아가 자연의 피해가 부각되는 개념으 로 진전되었다. 생태폭력은 그동안 “자연과 사람 모두에게 영향을 미치고, 분쟁 중에 발생할 수 도 있고 발생하지 않을 수도 있는, 행위자적이고 구조적인 폭력”으로 정의되었으나 현재는 환 경정의와 인간안보를 위협하는 것으로, 더 나아가 자연의 고유한 권리를 침해하는 것으로까지 의미가 확장·심화되었다. 이러한 생태폭력은 행위자적이거나 또는 구조적 특성을 갖지만 무엇 보다 이 두 가지 특성을 동시에 가진 폭력이란 특징을 가진다. 또한 자연, 사회, 심리적 차원을 포괄하며, 피해와 가해의 순환적 특징을 가졌다고도 주장된다. 생태폭력 개념은 관계의 박탈 과 같은 비가시적 폭력까지 주목함으로써 폭력에 대한 인식을 심화시키며, 폭력이 인간과 인간 을 둘러싼 환경 사이의 복잡한 상호관계 속에서 작동하는 것임을 보여준다는 점에서도 의의가 있다.
