Although the categories of violence recognized at the legal and institutional level are relatively clear, violence experienced in everyday life has evolved into less extreme but more prevalent forms. Everyday violence is a concept that encompasses physical and non-physical violence that is subtle but occurs repeatedly and routinely at a structural or individual level. The common feature of everyday violence is that it is accepted as normal behavior or at least not as a serious problem because it is expressed in a very subtle and trivial form. However, the physical and psychological pain experienced by victims who are exposed to everyday violence for a long period is considerable. Everyday violence is of great significance considering that it helps us recognize minor and subtle actions like microaggressions committed consciously or unconsciously as clear ‘violence.’ Furthermore, given that Korean society has become more diverse, it provides a new perspective needed to stop violence against minorities of the society and to build a peaceful society where various groups can coexist.

법적·제도적 차원에서 인정되는 폭력의 범주는 비교적 명확하지만 일상에서 경험하는 폭력은 덜 극단적이지만 보다 만연한 형태로 진화해왔다. 일상적 폭력은 그렇게 미묘하지만 구조적 또는 개인적 차원에서 반복적이고 일상적으로 발생하는 물리적·비물리적 폭력을 아우르는 개 념이다. 미묘하고 소소한 형태로 표출되기 때문에 사회에서 정상적 행태로 수용되거나 최소한 심각한 문제는 아니라는 인식이 강한 것이 특징이다. 하지만 일상적 폭력에 장기간 노출된 피 해자들이 받는 신체적·심리적 고통은 상당하다. 일상적 폭력 개념은 의식적·무의식적으로 가 해지는 사소하고 미묘한 행위들이 명확한 ‘폭력’으로 인식하도록 도와준다는 점에서 의미가 있 다. 또한, 다양성 시대에 한국사회와 한반도에서 일상화된 갈등을 비폭력적 방식으로 해소하 며 여러 집단이 공존할 수 있는 평화적 사회를 구축하는데 필요한 새로운 관점을 제공한다.
